Rarely do you get Cantonese-style food like this outside of Chinatown. Fortuna Court has had a steady band of followers since opening its doors to Norwood Parade in 1996. The dining decor has never been lavish, but neither have the prices. Its regular clientele is comprised of the local Chinese community and others who have sniffed out the authentic cuisine on offer.
Weiqiang Dong teamed up with fellow chef Hugo Guo and his brother Tong to take over this eatery in 2005. Weiqiang and his Cantonese cookery skills hail from the Fujiang province in China, which can be tasted in the Fujiang-style fried noodles.
Duck reigns supreme at Fortuna Court. Pluck your favourite from the 'eight treasure' style, the crispy-fried version, or the house speciality of Fortuna Soy Duck. Heat up your feast with Szechuan sliced fillet of pork or chicken with black peppercorns, or soothe your palate with the calm-inducing 'monk-style' vegetables. King prawns with seaweed salad beats the ol' prawn cocktail with iceberg lettuce anytime, while crab meat comes stir-fried on Asian greens. Fresh fish is offered daily, with the coral trout reigning as favourite.
Simple decor lets the food do all the talking at this cosy Chinese, and the Cantonese cuisine speaks loudly. The seafood-stuffed duck, in particular, is a glazed work of art.
