Housed in the former Dov site, Forbes & Burton reflects the trend for simplicity and value that has foodies and general fusspots quivering with delight. Think gauzy fabric and bare sandstone walls, crisp linen and, well, that's about it. Not a crystal chandelier or Philippe Starck bathroom fixture in sight. Most of the glamour is on the plate, courtesy of chef Andrew Stinear.
The contemporary Australian menu might include servings of Mediterranean flavours, seen in dishes such as the pan-fried gnocchi with cherry tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and basil; or the chargrilled lamb rump with pistachio and herb couscous, rocket, and harissa mayonnaise. Despite the exquisite dishes, a meal here won't burn a hole in the pocket of most - compared to many, it is an absolute bargain. FAB is that unique kind of daytime cafe full of fabulous fusions for foodies.

Surprises where you least expect them
Decided to treat a few friends for lunch and picked F&B out of a list of like to try restaurants. Being lunch I was initially a little disappointed by the rather limited menu but equally surprised by the fantastic wine list. Still we all managed to find food tasty enough but were still yearning for something more to go with the remaining wine. The chef whipped up a picnic plate that was simply delicious. I just love it when you ask for something out of the ordinary and the staff quietly accommodate you. I took a peek at the dinner menu on the way out and can assure you I'll be back.

Good Dining
FaB is a pleasant, cosy space out of the mainstream of Oxford Street. It can get a bit loud but the atmosphere is relaxing with simple finishes. Meals are a refreshing change from what's generally on offer. Service is inconspicuous, which some would say is bad, but I enjoyed that my glass was topped up or table cleared without realising it had happened. The constant availibility of chilled, filtered water is a surprising touch as so many establishments charge for bottled water these days. Finish with the house coffee, it's excellent.

The old Dov has been transformed and is worth the visit
Sitting at the same table I use to when this restaurant was known as the popular Dov, but now with white linen table clothes I reviewed the new Forbes & Burton menu and was impressed. The twice-cooked pork belly on lentil and cabbage was delicious, but save room for the desserts - we shared three amongst three, with the chocolate marquise and fig with signature yoghurt being our favourite. The wine list looked impressive with wine by the glass available and the service attentive. I definitely recommend dinner at Forbes & Burton.
