Consistently good value
I head to this place every few weeks. It's a small place but with a warm atmosphere that doesn't usually accompany a fish and chip shop. Service is always attentive and friendly and the quality of food is excellent, especially for the price ($31 for a meal for two includes a huge serving of a fillet of fish, chips, calamari and a very decent garden salad with dressing - always leaves us stuffed). Always fantastic, will be going back for (hopefully) years to come.

Fresh and tasty and consistent
We get take-away every month or so, and have done for a couple of years. Flatheads is the only place that does good, crisp fresh fish to go. We get the basic fish and chips and calamari. We have never had a bad experience, and once, when we overheard somone else complaining, (she didn't like her dish) the woman in charge handled it well- a refund, new dish and all sorted it out in a pleasant way. The cafe isn't flash, more a fish and chip shop than a fancy restaurent...

fish head cafe more like it!
I was visiting my sister's young family in Canberra and we decided to splash out and get fish and chips take away to have a picnic, as with small children restaurants are best avoided out of consideration for the other diners.
We ordered the NOT inexpensive "meal for three" and I ordered the "flathead and chips" meal.
When we arrived at our picnic location soon after that we discovered that the chips were half cooked and very soggy, the fish slightly smelly, as well as the calamari tasting and smelling not the freshest, the salad was slimy, and the real shock was that my flathead "fillet" actually still had half the head and fins attached. I know enough about fish to ascertain that it was not, in fact, flathead either. It had quite a pointed head. It was so disgusting to be surprised by this that I was unable to eat any thing else.
It was very disappointing to have our special picnic ruined. No one wanted to eat it so we ate some muesli bars and fruit we had in the car instead. Not exactly festive.
It was a huge disappointment. We tossed up whether to take it back but in the end decided we would rather just get on with our evening. I did have to comment some how though as it was just so poor and really did impact on our special night.

Best fish and chips in Canberra
We discovered Flatheads by chance after being in O'Connor for a seperate reason.

Their service is quick and very friendly even though they have been very busy every time we've been there. The seafood is the absolute best! Worth the drive from Belconnen or Tuggeranong.
