Fix St. James

If you like modern Mediterranean food, complemented by a fairly extensive wine list that won't break the budget, then Fix St. James is worth an evening reservation. That's not to say you can't visit this rather attractive city hole-in-the-wall during the day, it's just generally a little tougher to get a table during the "great corporate office exodus" that happens daily during lunch.

Evenings, on the other hand, are another affair. The more subtle mood that descends over the city after 6pm filters down Elizabeth Street and in through the doors of Fix. Gone are the rushed daytime antics. In their place is a calm split-level space in which diners can sip on a glass of vino while perusing the menu.

Newly installed chef Sam Bennett, formally of Glebe Point Diner, ensures that the food on offer remains enticingly interesting by changing a percentage of the dishes on an almost fortnightly basis. For this reason, it is hard to determine just what will be on offer next time you walk through the door. It could be anything from a roast duck for two, to a watermelon and Campari granita.

A great new eatery in the CBD
I took a chance with this restaurant because it was on the festival list and close to the Barracks. Their website doesn't do the food justice - it was simply superb. It's always a good sign when the bread is warm and delicious. The two clients I was with commented that their steaks were the best they'd had in a long time - my crispy skin salmon was cooked exactly as I had asked. And they didn't price gouge on the wines. We left in agreement that the new management deserves to succeed - Sydney needs more restaurants this focused on the food quality. That's why I'm writing this review.
