not for me
The location may be hard to find, but looks out to a nice view. The staff perhaps need to brush up their performance though, with slow and forgetful service most of the night.
The low point was with the meals which were served - I thought they were a bit poor. Tough cuts of meat and a sauce which was very weak.

Well worth a visit
I am a little confused by some of the reviews of this restaurant, especially Bazzi's review of visit on 14th February - over a couple of things there, actually...

Anyway, my husband and I have dined here quite regularly and we have never had bad experiences. The menu is quite varied and caters for main stream, vegetarian, gluten intolerant etc. One has the option of dining on smaller portions (with a smaller price tag)or larger portions for some dishes. Particular favourites of ours are the quail, mushroom caps, lamb shanks and cannelloni and I have enjoyed the cheesecake on a few occasions and liked it well enough. The Turkish breads and dips are very ample and suit a nice chat with friends over a bottle of wine as a starter - a little too much for two unless you are really hungry and only having a small main.

The wine list is appropriate and adequate with something to please all tastes.

This is a great casual dining restaurant experience in the heart of Kingston overlooking Green Square. Also good for business lunches and dinners. Great to see the view change with the seasons out through the large window.

great view
I thought that a place with a view as great as this wouldn't let other aspects of the restaurant down either.
It was a nice night with some good food, but the focus is definately the view. The quality of the food does let the venue down. The service was decent, but at times slow.
If they fix the food with a little more gusto, I might try here again.

What a great place to eat
I am surprised to read the reviews on this site of people that did not enjoy this restaurant! We ate at First Floor for the first time the other night and what a pleasure. The food was perfect. I have quite a few requirements with my diet and the Chef Darren Perryman really turned on a treat for me, no hassles at all. The restaurant was full and our drinks, order and food was done with the utmost professionalism and arrived in swift time. A big hats off to Darren and his team. We will be back for sure. If you have any sort of dietary requirements you should visit here they really looked after us. well done again.

Huge Disappointment
I was not thrilled to pay $270.00 for this woeful experience at the First Floor which never rose above basement level! Should have known better when all of the really good Canberra restaurants were booked out for Valentines and the First Floor had plenty of vacancies. Seated at 8pm and totally ignored for 15-20 minutes, not even offered a glass of water let alone the chance of a pre-dinner drink. Five course degustation menu with wine, except the disinterested waiters couldn't synchronise any of the matched wines to come with the miniscule portions of very average food. The oysters were not freshly shucked as advertised. Overpriced, outdated, pretentious food, non-existent service from surly unknowledgeable staff. Tiny portions and no carbohydrates (we were even refused bread) resulted in having to buy a kebab on the return to the hotel to avoid starvation. Don't waste your money, how do I know? Because I've been an internationally acclaimed chef for the past thirty years.

Wonderful!!!
My partner and I had dinner at the restaurant on Saturday night and found it a very enjoyable experience. My wife had the kangaroo and I had the best steak I have had in ages. The staff, though really busy, were always there when needed. I would recommend this place and will dine there again soon.

Disappointing
Disappointing- certain menu items not available. One main course totally forgotten. Food good but expensive. Small main portions. Side dishes ie salads/vegies also expensive. And to top it off - no cheese platters (apparently the fault of the supplier).

Really nice place, good food but a bit expensive
We went here on an impromptu dinner and what we had was quite a pleasant dining experience. Good food, good wines on offer. Service was pretty slow but the waiter made up for it with an offer of a hot toddie cocktail at the end of the night. But it was quite expensive for what it was. A nice restaurant experience though.

Disappointment
What a total disappointment. The restaurant wasn't that busy. The service was appauling. Having to wait 20 minutes for a beverage and that was after we got the waiters attention. The waiters were very dull and seemed not to care about the customers, too busy chatting over near the bar area. After having three courses, which were certainly quality not quantity however tasy and fresh, the waiter came over to see if we wanted coffees... obviously he wanted us to leave as he had already had our bill in his hand. So on that note we left after a nice meal, but the service left a lot to be desired.

Slow service, mediocre food & confused cheesecake
It took over an hour from being seated for mains to arrive despite not being full, which meant our beef had dried out from being under the heat-lamps for too long. Cheesecake was ordered for dessert, but what would elsewhere be described as panacotta with crushed nuts was served. When questioned if it was in fact the cheesecake the waitress replied "no, sorry, that looks like a creative panacotta" and proceeded to replace it with an identical one with no base whatsoever. When later asked why our cheesecake didn't look like the ones we'd seen on other tables, the waiter argued "they had been last week's which had run out" and that ours really was cheesecake despite the lack of biscuit-base and distinct panacotta taste and wobble!

Perfect service and atmosphere
I have only been to First Floor once, about a week ago, and it really is a great restaurant. The wait staff are attentive and friendly, the meals are generous and delicious and the atmosphere is superb - I loved the windows looking over Green Square. This is the type of place that makes you choose to leave a tip!
