Getting to this dining temple is an adventure in itself. The entry to First is an unassuming hallway off Rundle Mall - look for the Hotel Richmond sign through the glass doors. The modern style of the dining room hits you in a flash. All white lines, inviting lounges and natural light. The staff are prompt to greet patrons and are both friendly and professional. Take time to soak up the experience and sit in one of the lounges for a pre-dinner drink, before trying the Campari roast duck - it's foodie heaven. Thai fish cakes can often be boring and flavourless, but not here. From the light crunch of the crumb, the texture of the fish with a hint of coconut and zing of coriander, chilli and lemongrass, these fishcakes don't even need the sauce. A glass of wine to enhance the flavours would be just the tonic. The wine list is unashamedly Australian, but boutique producers are well represented, with a smattering of examples from around the world.
