Fino

Located in a reno'd cottage in Willunga, Fino inserts a touch of rural Mediterranean charm into picturesque McLaren Vale. With whitewashed plaster walls, slate floors and an open kitchen, the space offers a simple and appropriately homely backdrop for chef David Swain's (ex-Star of Greece) hearty provincial food. The dishes are designed to share, but this is not tapas. Rather than the wimpy little bite-sized portions of most tapas dishes, Fino provides its rustic food in hearty serves of about the same size as a generous entree. Think a rustic feast of Mediterranean fare, made with market-fresh McLaren Vale produce from local farmers and served in whimsical earthenware bowls. The menu is an evolutionary entity that depends entirely on what is fresh that day, but diners might find themselves tucking into the likes of house-made pork and fennel sausages; or perhaps steamed mussels and clams with jamon.

A fine dining experience!
We'd had a gorgeous meal the night before at Russell's, also in Willunga, so Fino had a hard act to follow. They did not disappoint. We opted for the 5-course extravaganza and THEN had dessert! Each dish was delightful, most memorable was the pork belly for me and the whiting for him, we both adored the crema catalana. The servings were pleasantly generous (not that that was a bad thing it was definitely quality!). The only boo-boo was that he asked for a glad of the white Hungarian sticky at the end, Tokaji, and was served a honey-flavoured port-type red wine liqueur (which I quite enjoyed!). Nonetheless, it was a memorable night of exquisite fresh food and local wine. The staff were extremely helpful, but not in an obtrusive, in-your-face kind of way. The atmosphere was relaxed and unpretentious. And, despite having six courses, plus bread, weren t made to wait for 30+ minutes in-between courses! Were looking forward to our return.

lunch with attitude
The food was good, the attitude was hard to swallow. We had heard good things about this restaurant. We were looking forward to it. We knew it wasn't "cheap"...but really am I the only person who thinks over that over $90 is a bit extreme for fish, steak, small plain, salad and soft drinks? Now the mains did taste good, but the servers had such attitude, it was hard to feel comfortable. I have lived in different countries, travelled abroad and extensively in Australia, but I have never been to a place so unfriendly and full of itself, and I'm really not sure why the staff thought they were so special .The interior was only just bearable in relation to the temperature (no air conditioning in very hot weather) and the decor was nothing fancy, but oh, how the waiting staff pranced around, and for what? I'm sure I cant imagine. The style I would call "bossy". At the end of the mains, we were all but ignored, not offered a desert or coffee menu despite having our table cleared, then when we asked for the cheque some 10 minutes later, were rudely asked why we weren't staying for desert (still don't even know what was on offer) After having already spent the better part of $100 for this less than inspiring experience, I was just keen to leave as soon as possible, and make other plans for any further refreshments.

Phew !!!
We opted for the chef to surprise us with a multi-course tasting. The quail was minimal (naturally), the smoked eel salad nice, the asparagus great, the tommy ruff - the best ever, the duck sublime, and the rabbit tasty. Desert was outstanding and the coffee amazing! Relatively the wine was expensive but the food isn't. The service was friendly and perfectly timed in a busy restaurant. We'll be back

Fantastic experience
This is the second time I have visited this restaurant and again it was superb. The food sublime, the wine list small - but wonderfully eclectic. I love the fact that you can experience wines from around the world and the recommendations were perfectly matched to our food. I am in the wine industry and have recommended this restaurant to a number of customers who have let me know that their experience was wonderful also. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Do yourselves a favour.

A disappointment
The meal was fine and tasty but lacking in content. The portions were far smaller than I expected. I'm glad I don't frequent tapas bars. The wine list was quite small, pricy and I expected more local content. All in all the meal was OK if not a little expensive.
