The owners of Brisbane's acclaimed restaurant Byblos have extended their scope with this vivacious venture, which opened back in February, 2009. The awe-inspiring menu of cocktails, champagnes, wines and other alcoholic beverages is complemented by a high-quality selection of contemporary Australian and Mediterranean tapas and mains. From seared Queensland scallops with squid ink vinaigrette and crisp pancetta through to wagyu sirloin with roasted red vein garlic, Sarladaise potato and red wine jus, it's clear that the guys at Fifth Element mean business when it comes to fresh gourmet ingredients and innovative fusions of flavour.

A wine lover's dream, with great food as well
This venue is a must visit next time you find yourself in South Bank. My wife and I dined here on the recommendation of a number of friends. I could see from the moment we walked in why this place has so many loyal followers. We were immediately greeted by our friendly, attentive waiter and given a rundown of the how the venue works: there is an extensive wine cellar that works as a retail takeaway and a wine tasting room (they have over 70 wines by the glass, apparently the largest selection in Australia), a busy bar area and an outdoor dining area.
Food was good and was perfectly matched with wines. The service was friendly and knowledgeable and the atmosphere was busy but not tense.
We will definitely be back.

Pretty good food, wine and atmosphere but...
The waiter wouldn't leave us alone. I learned a lot about the different wines and was amazed this waiter knew so much about them, but in the enthusiastic discussion I ended up missing a meeting of sorts because we had arrived there a bit before 6pm expecting it to only take an hour or less but ending up leaving at around 8:45. By the time that we had finished the main meal it was already too late to bother.
The waiter was very attentive and polite however I did want to have a conversation with my boyfriend without the waiter there and he didn't seem to take the conversational hints that we wanted to have some peace.
I had the duck as a main which I thought was good, but agreeing with Pageynick, a fairly small portion, and it was also quite salty! I know that everyone has different tastes but I think it's better to go on the too little salt than too much.
I will definitely come here again and perhaps with a larger group because it is such a nice venue and the food is really great. I just think the waiter needed to be more concise with his length of conversation, and perhaps not so much salt...

a very poor experience
went for a friends birthday expecting good things. it started badly when we chose our first beers from the extensive beer list - told oh no sorry this is the wrong list, they then came back with a list a quarter of the size....oh well. Then chose the beer - and they didn't have the 1st two choices, no problem we went to the bar and looked at what they did have (an average collection to that billed). The girls had wine by the glass - 2 of the 3 wines chosen not available - the wine waiter brought over alternatives with telling us that the originals not available - poor service!
waitress told us she had a hangover at this point - she was a friendly enough girl, but not sure if it was the hangover or if she was just unprofessional - (read utterly useless).
then for the food -
starters were average, no real complaints (if being picky you could say that 1 single sand mud does not a starter make- but hey, it looked pretty!)
mains - pathetic is about the only word that comes to mind! Venison comes out uncooked - not underdone or a bit rare (yes I know it is supposed to be rare) but this was NOT cooked. sent it back to the kitchen - it then returns a few minutes later cooked to a crisp. Of the 3 miniature pieces one of them was purely gristle. Ended up sending it back to the kitchen in disgust (and fairly enough it was duly (at our request) removed from the bill). The Lamb backstrap must have come from one small lamb (maybe a couple of inches tall - it took all of around 15 seconds to eat. the fish dish was overcooked and dry, the duck wasn't bad - if a tad small portion. The only decent thing that came out of the kitchen were the steaks (and lets be honest how hard is it too cook a steak - but even these were not cooked to order (blue came out rare).
wine - for a treat for the girls birthday they decided to order a taste of 1988 Penfolds Grange at $22 for a couple of sips - no problem there other than it was the dreggs of the bottle and full of sediment!
At this point we cut our loses and got the bill, and it was getting cold and they couldn't get the heaters to work.
all in all a very poor overall experience - and as you will possibly guess if you have read this far on none of the six of us will be returning.
