Fenix

Just 10 minutes from the Melbourne CBD, this sophisticated diner enjoys an uncommonly tranquil spot perched above the Yarra River. Gary Mehigan of MasterChef Australia fame reopened this Melbourne institution after a lengthy two-year hiatus, nabbing seasoned chef Martin Horsley for his grand comeback. A quick perusal of the restaurant website reveals it as a lucrative little launch pad for Mehigan's celebrity exploits (just follow the newsletter to see what TV projects he has lurking in the pipeline), but after flicking to the mouth-watering menu, all is forgiven.

Strong evidence of Mehigan's English upbringing can be found in the exceedingly approachable menu, which features warming rustic dishes such as his famous Sussex Pond pudding and Sunday lunch roast guinea fowl with all the trimmings. In fact, a whole portion of the dinner menu is charmingly dedicated to "comfort food" and "shared dishes".

French refinement plays its part, too, as seen in dishes such as the pressed rabbit and prosciutto terrine and a 36-hour braised lamb shoulder with parsnip puree, but it's the simplicity of the creations that will no doubt have diners' tongues wagging about the flavoursome menu until their next visit.

Very disappointed
I'd heard mixed reviews but we wanted to check it out anyway. The service was good, great space which I'm sure is lovely on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The food however was a huge let down, I wonder if Gary is aware of this??? The fish was rock hard, tough on the outside and raw in the middle, the steak was also tough and covered in fat (not good fat). The quality of the meals did not reflect the prices which were relatively expensive, we would have been better off going to our trusty place down the road than travelling into Richmond. I remember commenting to my friend that even I can cook fish better than this. I can't recommend it to friends, which is very sad because I think Gary is a lovely person and seems to know what he's doing in the masterclasses....

Sorry guys.

Like a cafe but with great food.
Despite being a Saturday night, the restaurant was quite empty and therefore very quiet. The decor is fairly casual with the focus on the outside views and the service laid back.

In terms of the food it was nicely presented and rather good. A stand-out of the night was the Chocolate marquise with black figs, PX sherry & anise ice cream.

Uhm....one word - disappointed
Maybe there was too much hype, I'm not sure. We were a party of 5 and it was a bit of a reunion for the girls.
In a nutshell - the food was disappointing and there was virtually no service.
Two good plates for the whole meal were the soup entree that one person had, and another had the lamb for main. The grilled scallops entree which the rest of us had was cold, it had obviously been left sitting for some time, and I've never seen tinier scallops on a shell. 4 of us decided to have the share plates for mains, the fish....was bland and unexciting. Then came dessert which was burnt, as was our take-home gift of honeycomb (sure it was free, but it was burnt, why give anything?).

Then there was the service, or lack of it. After asking numerous times for water and wine glasses to be refilled (and there is no exaggeration here), we went and got our bottles from the serving desk and served ourselves. No one came to check if everything was okay or anything, and we had to ask where the mains were because it was over an hour after entrees.

Can't say I would recommend it.
