Fellini

Joining South Yarra's Toorak Road, Fellini enlivens the dining strip from breakfast through to lunch, dinner and after-dinner drinks. The decor is crisp and clean, with merry yellow-and-white striped awnings, mirrored walls, polished wooden floors, a spacious open kitchen and big windows that open out to kerbside seating. The menu's blend of modern Mediterranean dishes with an Italian emphasis is not surprising considering the heritage of Fellini's co-owner, Carlton footballer Brendan Fevola.

Celebrity attraction aside, the restaurant is a gourmand's delight, featuring dishes such as fresh tagliatelle tossed in a braised lamb ragu with grana padano and parmesan; oysters and prawn risotto; or the popular marinated lamb cutlets served on spicy pepperonata and drizzled with marsala. There's also a separate menu of gourmet, thin-crust pizzas, featuring such options as the ortolana - grilled eggplant, charred zucchini, fresh tomato, roasted red peppers, fiore di latte and basil. For something sweet, look to the house-made cakes and desserts, including such classics as tiramisu. Comfy wall couches beckon those who just want to sink back with a welcome drink, picked from a wine list featuring bottles from Spain, France, Italy, New Zealand and Australia.

Fellini experience
I went for dinner by myself on Thursday night and surprisingly the waiter told me the oysters had been sold out even though the place was almost empty. I decided to try the garlic foccacia, which was a suggestion of one of the senior staff. After the focaccia I had to wait about 30 minutes for a seafood risotto which was really average and overcooked. I also wanted to try one of the whites in the list but they had also sold out my choice.
In conclusion the experience was not very pleasant.

Fellini exterior looks attractive but for its location, we expected better. We weren't greeted so we sat ourselves down; we were acknowledged but didn't receive any menus. After a fair wait we got up to get our own menus and some for the table next to us who were also waiting. We ordered a Latte, a Chai, the Fellini Breakfast and a house special - Spicy Sticky Chicken Salad. We had expected to receive our drinks within about 10 mins but instead my partner was served his breakfast. It appeared to have been sitting for a while but was still hot. Halfway thru his breakfast our drinks arrived but soon realised they were the wrong order. At the end of my partner s meal our correct drinks arrived. After all was finished and we were contemplating leaving... my meal finally arrived. I was given a recycled napkin, the Avocado was unripe, the Tomatoes were pale and tasteless, the Bacon was not crispy and the Chicken not sticky or spicy. The table next to us were also served incorrect orders. Even thou the venue wasn't busy they ran out of bread, the Barista had to buy some from the shop across the road. The interior was ok, you could see thru to a storage area which made the place look a little 'rough', good views to the street thou. On departing our waitress queried about our experience, we had to be honest about how shocking it was, she was nice and apologetic but still charged full price.

Great food, great service
Me and my partner went to Fellini for tea while we were visiting Melbourne. We are both Carlton fans and decided we would check out the place. We had a garlic brushetta to share which was great. For our mains my partner had lamb shanks with mashed potato which I tasted and was absolutly divine, I also tasted the lamb which melted in my mouth. I had a chicken pasta dish (this dish as the waiter said was in the lunch menu but they would be quite happy to cook it for dinner), the chicken was cooked perfect and melted in my mouth, pasta was cooked thoroughly wasnt half cooked or overcooked at all. We were able to get a bottle of wine to complement our meal after discussions with the waiter who reccomended this certain type. The service was perfect wasnt too pushy and was very informative on the meals when I asked him which pasta dish to choose. Overall the experience was great and I can't wait to go back again, the only thing I would prefer is if Fev is there!

OK.. nothing too flash
In a place like Melbourne, you expect exciting food. Fellini was unfortunately quite boring. The menu did not impress me (standard dips platter, brushetta etc). I was also surprised that the restaurant was not very busy (less than 1/4 full) The selection of mains was small. The addition of pizzas cheapens the menu. I went with my girlfriend. We shared a salt and cracked pepper calamari which was fantastic. The mains were not so good. My prawns had sand grits in the salsa verde sauce and the pasta in my freinds marinara was not cooked properly. The staff were very helpful and friendly though.

Really nice food
My experience at Fellini was an average one. The night started with "sorry sir this is not a BYO restaurant" when clearly on yourRestaurants it says (BYO Wine only) The manager was nice enough to allow the wine to be opened. My group was for five people with the table clearly only for four. Fellini was well staffed but staff had little knowledge on the menu.

Our order was taken and a few minutes later the person that took our order came back and said they had run out of rib eye, surprisingly it was only 7.30pm on a Saturday night. In summary the food was great, meals size was reasonable, selection on the menu was not large but something for everyone. The service was average and the atmosphere was modern but missing that restaurant feel. It felt like more of a cafe.

Great food, price, only thing missing was Fev
A visit was made by my partner and me, as I am such a Carlton/Fevola fan. And a really nice meal was had. To start with we had the bruschetta special of the day, yoghurt and pesto, though this did seem like a traditional tomato-based bruschetta. Mains we both decided on the stuffed chicken breast served on risotto, this was beautiful. Stuffing was semi-dried tomatoes and cheese. Finished of with a choice from the cakes display, I couldn't go past my favourite vanilla slice and a latte. My partner had 2 beers (Coronas) and I also had a drink during dinner. Staff are friendly and only too happy to assist, premises clean, and well priced our evening came in under $90.00. Well worth our 50 miniute drive, I will be back again. Only let down was I didn't get to see Fev! Where the b!#@!Y hell are ya?
