Fekerte's

This restaurant, run by eccentric owner-chef Ferkerte Tessaye, is 100 percent Ethiopian. With an array of interesting dishes on offer, such as keywat (spicy beef) and lega tibs (lamb marinated in spices and sauteed with onions and peppers), this eatery has a popular local following. The dining room is sleek and modern, but the food takes centre stage. With dishes like cauliflower fritters in chickpea batter served with a yoghurt sauce, there's something crunchy, spicy and tangy (use the lemony injera bread to sop up all the sauce) for everyone here.

Delicious authentic food
My husband and I had dinner at Fekerte's and were blown away by how delicious the food was. We have eaten ethiopian cuisine before and this was well above par.

We ordered the platter for two which comes with a great array of food - two meat dishes, a chickpea dish, curried vegetables, a lentil dish, cream cheese, herbs and plenty of ingera to eat with. At $30 per person it might sound a little pricey but you get so much delicious food and it is beautifully presented. The food was not oily or salty, just very filling and very flavoursome.

We saw many dishes coming out to tables nearby that looked equally enticing and everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their meal.

The service was a little bit slower than I would like but to be fair it was busy. The staff were very friendly and catered for dietary needs - eg I asked to swap one of the 'set' dishes in the platter to a milder option and they were very obliging, even made suggestions on things I might enjoy more than the spicy meals.

We will definitely be eating here again and recommending it to people.

Left a bad taste
I ate here the other night and was very disappointed. It was too expensive and the food wasn't great - overly salty and very oily.

Nice and a little different
I've only been here once. The food was spicy and delicious and the service pretty good.

Yummy and interesting food
We all had a platter, which was beautifully presented, plenty of food and fantastic flavours. It is great to eat something a little different in Canberra. Recommended for a nice evening of tasty and interesting food.

I can't believe this is the first review!!
This is such an excellent restaurant. The food is so different to anything I have experienced. Hot and sour flavours. We had the banquet which was a jamboree of colours and flavours and served on the special bread unique to Fekerte's. The Pepperjack shiraz suggested by our waitress matched the food deliciously. Mr Fekerte told us all about traditional Ethiopian dining while Mrs Fekerte worked hard in the kitchen delivering the scrummy fare. The desserts were just the perfect ending to the evening (sweet, fruity and nutty). Yum, I'll definitely be returning.
