A recent addition to High Street Northcote's eclectic mix, Fat Cat Bar & Bistro is a British venue in every sense of the word.
Fat Cat is a fusion of British bars old and new. Stepping into a cavernous front bar with polished concrete floors and black-and-white photos adorning stucco walls, you could be forgiven for thinking you'd entered any one of Britain's myriad chain pubs. But a short walk past the bar will find you transported to ye olde English tavern, replete with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, board games aplenty and aged leather couches surrounding a welcoming open fireplace. Indeed, one felt almost under-dressed without tweed jacket and pipe.
It is only upon surveying the menu that Fat Cat departs from its British origins. The concise menu changes regularly and includes traditional British fare, including the obligatory bangers 'n' mash, augmented by continental European favourites determined by the freshest available market produce. Offering an array of beers to make any landlord proud, the wine list also extends to include French and Australian favourites.
Sure to be a hit with the British expat community, Fat Cat will also appeal to anyone looking for an authentic taste of the Ol' Dart.
