Set on the outskirts of the NMIT's Fairfield campus, Fairfield Nursery Cafe is a casual hybrid of country kiosk and college canteen. The combination of easy rock music, an array of magazines and daily papers, and comfy couches gives this place a student-friendly vibe, but the trim wicker furnishings and inviting alfresco spaces also create an enticingly rustic atmosphere for off-campus lunchers.
The cuisine is fairly standard cafe fare with commercially baked pies and soups of the day, alongside house-baked cookies and slices. A glass display cabinet at the main counter features an array of fresh cakes, salad wraps, quiches and luscious ciabatta sandwiches that are all designed for rush hour takeaway. It's rare that a cafe accepts bookings but this place does, as their limited tables are understandably often crammed with staff and coffee-guzzling students.
If you're looking to relax, take your lunch and go for a wander in the tranquil landscaped grounds. Alternatively, snag a table and match your lunch with a glass of sauvignon blanc, shiraz or chardonnay, made by students at NMIT's Epping campus and poured exclusively at the Nursery Cafe.
