We Graze At Griffith

You don't have to be a member of the E.U. to enter this effortlessly European cafe, a warm and inviting haven suited to a social catch-up, a family brunch, a business lunch or a romantic rendezvous. Formerly known as Element Restaurant, E.U. Cafe is run by the same friendly crew, though this time they've put a bit of extra love into their venture, refurbishing the room into a more casual cafe with timber floorboards, new wallpaper, a repaint, more light, and a brighter atmosphere all around. With longer opening hours too, there's more time to enjoy the new menu - a thoroughly European affair dabbling in everything from charcuterie plates to ratatouille to Spanish paella.

great spot for brunch
I try to come here fairly often. It is such good food here and the staff are very welcoming. The must-haves are a banana smoothie and the Itlian omlette, though my wife promises that everything she's had, have been amazing too.
What more could you want; a nice table, good staff and great food.

Good food, ordinary service
Similar to Spencee above, we had to ask several times for the bread (to accompany moules) - it finally arrived as my husband finished his meal. Moules were light on too; although of good quality not nearly enough to satisfy the appetite. Ditto with string fries, served in a a rather mean little dish leaving you wanting. I had chicken breast filled with cheese and pumpkin. I asked if it was goat cheese (which I don't like) and was told "don't think so"; it was. However flavours of pumpkin etc sort of disguised that. There is no ventilation in the front part of the cafe, so sweltered as cafe filled up. We waited one hour for mains; was over it and not interested in desserts after that. Clearly not enough staff and those that were there were not personable. In summary, a disappointing experience and I won't be going back.

Can't wait to go back
The service was top class, the menu exciting, the food was absolutely delicious! I had a main course of rib eye steak with a balsamic seeded mustard jus over it, which was served with blue cheese macaroni and green beans. It was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and very tasty. My partner had spaghetti with scallops, crab, mushrooms and fennel, and again this was incredibly tasty. The serves were good sizes. Our food came in good time, and plates were cleared away quickly. The waiter came around mid way through our meal to see how everything was going and ask if there was anything else we needed. We were both very impressed with this restaurant and will definitely go back.

Great dinning experience
Intending to enjoy fine dinning at Elements but found it had transform into "eu cafe" when making the call. The staff taking the booking was very pleasant and took the time to explain the new look menu.
We we seated in the front part of the restaurant and the tables were well spaced - not so squeezy!
Waitstaff were very helpful in explaining the menu. In addition to the menu, there was a huge blackboard selection.
Settled for the mixed Tapas, the chef's selection for the night were risotto balls with 3 cheese, meatballs, seared scallops and pork belly. All done to perfection. Although the theme may be Spanish, the presentation and flavours are definitely "haute cuisine". For the main it was paella with seafood and chicken. A generous serving and delicious. Dessert was the crema catalana.
Wine were reasonably priced and the selection varied. I thought an addition of a Granacha (or Grenache) would be in keeping spanish flavours, nevertheless I stayed with the verdelho which went well with my menu selection.
Waitstaff were superb; attentive and despite being a full house on a Saturday night, they found time to explain the food and offer wine suggestions. The timing between courses was good.
Excellent value - haute cuisine at cafe prices.

Great food let down by poor service
We went out for brunch with friends on a Sunday after reading the great rap on EU given by Canberra Times. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced but the service left much to be desired.

We were seated quickly and drinks were ordered - good start but went downhill from there - at no point once the food was ordered did anyone come near us to ask if we needed anything such as more drinks, to clear dirty dishes or to replace our empty water bottle.

We had to ask for sugar for the coffees and salt(we were eventually given a sachet of salt - a shaker would have been nicer). We also had to ask for a spoon for the porridge one of us ordered. One of our party ordered the croissant and bowl of hot chocolate as a second part of his breakfast - the croissant arrived without the bowl of hot chocolate which came about 10 minutes later.

What made this worse was that all of this occurred while wait staff walked right past us constantly (as we were sitting right at the back on the deck) to get to the cold room and we could also see wait staff standing inside (at one stage a group of 3) apparently doing nothing.

Yes they were very busy, particularly when we arrived, but I can't accept that as an excuse for such poor service. Their food is delicious so it's a pity at least two couples won't be back due to the poor service.

Was Element Now EU Cafe
EU Cafe at the Griffith shops has been rebadged from what was the old Element. The decor has undergone a refresh, however the layout remains the same i.e. with outside seating, inside front seating, rear seating . . . so a lot of seating!

Went twice on the same day, coffee at breakfast and a work lunch.

Reasonable dining range on the menu and as it was St Paddy's day I had the Guiness Beer Battered Fish and Chips, served with shoestring fries and mushy peas. The fish was very good and the batter nice and crisp.

We sat out the rear which is undercover and as it is only early Autumn the setting was warm and inviting.

Service was above average, however it was Tuesday and it was not overly busy. The wine list is good and has a selection of local and international wines and we selected a very reasonably priced (NZ Sav Blanc @$29).

So overall a pleasant and value for money lunch venue. Keep an eye out for my other Canberra lunch time reviews.
