Restaurant Information
Etro
This King Street noshery has taken on a number of guises over the past few years. It's been the Bien Fine Food Cafe and, prior to that, Mezzonine. The current owners, Emma and Patrick Panier, transformed the space a few years ago into a light, bright daytime cafe and bistro. The food is elegantly rustic and pleasingly arranged on the plate. The omelette with ratatouille is the standout brekkie option, while the duck liver pate with red onion jam and toasted fresh bread is an excellent start to lunch - especially when matched with a cheeky glass of daytime vino.

Three Times for Lunch Since Christmas
Etro Cafe is on King Street, near the corner of Hay Street, approximately across from the Belgian Beer Cafe. It is one of the few places in Perth that actually allows enough room between tables to be able to have comfortably private conversations. It is well lit, with plenty of natural light, minimalist furniture (with larger, squishier booths towards the back of the restaurant). One of the walls is orange with tile-sized paintings of jazz singers and bands. There is a second floor that I have never seen, where they host wedding receptions etc. The bottom of the staircase is painted with a mural of the New York skyline, but that doesn't stop people from failing to notice the staircase and banging their head.
I have had the seasonal vegie omelette twice and I hope to get back and have it again before the menu changes. Lots of vegies - based primarily on onion, zucchini and capsicum at the moment. Rather than being a traditional omelette, it's a lot more like a frittata without cheese. This is a rather spectacular example of egg-based dishes - crispy and brown on the edges, fluffy through the middle and dense with vegies. Delicious.
My ex-boss has had pate and bread, which she enjoyed immensely. It came with a range of pickles and capers to cut the richness of the pate, which you add yourself to suit yourself. However, I have had a cream of sweet potato and ginger soup that was a sad disappointment. I'm not a big fan of 'cream of' soups to begin with, so this is partially my fault. I was sucked in by the promise of ginger. This dish was in fact a bowl of sweet potato flavoured cream - no discernable ginger anywhere. When I pointed out that this wasn't what I was expecting in a soup sold as 'sweet potato and ginger', I was told that some people are allergic to ginger, so they don't put very much in. Foolish me - I assumed that people who are allergic to particular foods don't buy them. I ate less than a third of the soup.
Pricing = mid-range and excellent value for money (apart from the soup misadventure).
Recommended - but double check what it is that you will be getting.
