Students, professionals and schnitzel hounds continue a long-term love affair with this popular traditional European restaurant in Broadway. Known previously as Una's, Essen Restaurant and Beer Cafe is run by the same owner, Geert Elzinga, who has decided to push the benchmark a bit higher. Long-time fans can still tuck into monolithic Hungarian, chicken and wiener schnitzels till the cows (or lonely goatherds) come home. But Essen now offers an enticing variety of gourmet specials and Austrian and German beers, hence the addition of "beer cafe" to its name. From farm-fresh duck that has been lovingly oven-roasted overnight, deboned and rolled, to the three-hour slow-roasted pork knuckle, Essen brings true European flavour to its gorgeous sandstone location.
