If restaurants like Pizza e Birra and Mille Vini are unfamiliar to you, feel free to crawl back under your rock and enjoy the damp. For the rest of Sydney, welcome to your next Italian hotspot.
The brainchild of Mauro Marcucci, Enopizzeria is almost guaranteed success, based on Marcucci's track record alone. However, this enoteca would be a hit no matter whose name was attached to it. The decor is simple, refined, yet still fun, creating the energy and atmosphere of a buzzing trattoria.
The pizzas, as you would expect, are all executed perfectly and are accompanied by some very progressive pasta dishes. Don't expect the tired spaghetti and red sauce to be trotted out here - instead, look for fregola dishes combined with quality cuts of meat.

Great Expectations
One of my frustrations as a local living in Neutral Bay is that there are no good small bars/ restaurants on the North Shore that compare to the strip of restaurants/ bars along Victoria Street, Darlinghurst and Crown Street, Surry Hills.
So you can imagine my excitement, when the latest Italian pizzeria opened underneath the new Lucca apartments, 21 Grosvenor St Neutral Bay, rivaling the already established, Firefly.
I phoned to make a booking for the same night a (Tuesday night) and was told that they were fully booked, but we could have a table for 4 people at 6:30pm as long as we were done by 8:30pm. I was impressed, fully booked on a Tuesday night and they were keen to accommodate us.
What makes a good restaurant is the total experience from the moment you walk in until you leave. On arrival we were shown straight to our table; the staff were not welcoming or friendly at all, while the place was full, it had a rather cold feel about it, with cement floors, dark colours and dim lights.
Our assigned waiter tried hard, I loved the authenticity of the waiters being Italian, but it appeared our waiter could barely understand English, or perhaps it was our accents he couldn t understand!
We asked for some bread with olive oil while we waited for our fourth guest to arrive, the bread was the size of croutons to share between three, without complaining we asked for another serving.
We ordered three pizzas and four entrees, our fourth entr?e didn t arrive, and instead we all received a main dish, lamb with risotto, a communication break-down between us and our Italian waiter. He was very apologetic and we were too nice to make him take it back. However we weren t disappointed, the food was fantastic, the pizza s amazing and the wine good. At least they got one thing right!
I had great expectations of this place, as a regular of Pizza e Birra, and Mille Vini in Surry Hills, but unfortunately the service killed it. It s one thing to serve great food, but learn to crack a smile if you want to attract a local clientele and keep us coming back. As for now it s back over the bridge where I feel more welcome than in my own backyard!
