En Izakaya

Balaclava may not be the first suburb where one would assume to find fantastic modern Japanese, but this delightful cafe-cum-restaurant offers a selection of light yet filling dishes. These top tastes include their tempura oysters, a slew of fresh sushi rolls and sashimi, and a delightfully different tataki of trevalla.

Hidden Gem (but not for long)
Tucked away on Carlisle St is a gorgeous japanese izakaya called En! Izakaya. My friend & I ended up sharing 5 dishes (no rice) which was plenty. Not being a fan of Asian-style desserts, we chose our dishes to share from the savoury selection. I almost stole both of the soft-shell crabs from the plate they were that delicious!

Another great dish was the tempura-style whiting with salted plum. The lightest tempura batter I'd ever tasted covered a moist piece of fish the size of my thumb. Wow what flavour such a delicate piece of fish can have when handled correctly by this master chef.

Our favourite dish of the night however was the wonderful yuba tuna (tuna & spring onion wrapped in tofu skin & snap fried). Flavours of such depth I'd never tasted.

Our wait-staff on the night was also in her element & couldn't have been more knowledgeable or helpful. A great evening out!

Really, really good modern Japanese
Ate here with my fiance for the first time last night and we will definitely be coming back.
The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Staff were attentive and helpful - offering suggestions of good dishes to have together.
The dishes are small & designed to share, which is a bonus as you can try many of the interesting sounding menu options. The tofu & eggplant was so flavoursome, melding the best elements of nasu dengaku & agedashi tofu into one dish. Tempura soft-shell crab was amazingly good value at $13 for two whole crabs and my fiance's favourite of the night. Desserts were not quite up to the same standard, but ok... we should have ordered an extra savoury dish instead!
All in all, delicious food, attentive staff, very good value, it's my new favourite!
