Embrasse Restaurant

Since opening in January 2009, this stylish restaurant has quickly become part and parcel of the upper echelons of the Melbourne dining scene.

Embrasse is the labour of love of French chef Nicolas Poelaert, who infuses his penchant for quality Australian produce and passion for the kind of rustic French cuisine he grew up with back home into his menu. Indeed, Poelaert brings to Embrasse a modern, worldly edge from his experiences working at places such as the three-Michelin-star restaurant Michel Bras in France, and locally lauded establishments Vue de Monde and Circa.

Based on the seasons, the menu comes up roses with the inclusion of floral extracts and earthy herbs, as in the poached pork fillet with barley, oat gateau, potato veloute, golden raisin and fresh Sezchuan pepper, or the gourmand tomato salad with herbs, flowers and vegetable puree and emulsions. Sensuous sides include the Aligot cheesy mash potato sourced from the south of France, while delicious desserts feature fresh berries from Poelaert's garden.

Brilliant
Great restaurant and a fine example of French cuisine. Delicious, exquisitely presented food in a comfortable atmosphere, not to big and busy which I quite liked.

The plating of the Aligot side dish was a surprising and delightful experience (and tasty), as was the candle encased in spun sugar made extra special for my birthday - added to the chocolate mushroom desert which was brilliant.

Topped off with a great wine list made the night very special. Will definitely be going back again.

Must come back again!
Lost for words can be good sometimes, that's exactly what we've experienced.
Not too often Sommelier can match wines with foods so well.
A must visit for serious foodies!

Prettiest food I've seen and tasted!
I was looking for Three One Two but came across Embrasse instead, and decided to give it a go. And what a find! The service is very friendly, knowledgeable and relaxed. The ambience is great, but the stark contemporary look is at slight odds with the whimsical food. The food is however... simply incredible.

Every plate that comes onto the table is like a mini painting, with meticulous arrangements and beautiful colours. The pork belly confit, an entree, was perfectly cooked. Just as excellent are the main courses that my partner and I had: venison and john dory.

The most visually amazing dish had to be the chocolate parfait dessert. It literally looked a magical forest! My partner couldn't help letting out a 'wow'.

In all, I find Embrasse an outstanding restaurant and a memorable experience. I've also just found out that Chef Nicolas Poelaert has won the Good Food Guide's Young Chef of the Year award. Congratulations!

OK but not great
Service was fantastic.
Atmosphere is lacking. Some dishes were good, some only so-so. If you drink water and would prefer tap then ask for tap, the option they give of still or sparkling means a $12 500ml bottle of still water.

One to watch
I too had an enjoyable time at Embrasse. The food was fresh, interesting and cooked to perfection. The menu was concise however the food from the kitchen was rewarding. I'd be interested in seeing the chef put together a degustation with matched wines...on wine the list has an interesting design and needs some more work. It must be a work in progress - I think its a case of "working on it". I'm sure the list will get there soon - as long as its not forgotten about as is often the case with chef run restaurants. Keeping the wine list alive is equally as important as keeping the kitchen going!

Check it out and then go back for more, then go back again. We need to ensure new little gems like this keep going.

What a find
The menu seemed almost too simple, only a few choices for each course but the food was wonderful. I was overwhelmed by the excellent combination of flavours and textures. I ordered the ocean trout which was a refreshing and clean starter. Next, came the pork fillet. Well, what can I say, the meat was perfect. Cooked (I'm not one for underdone pork), but moist and flavoursome. If you read the information section above and are a little sceptical of the barley, oat and rasin accompaniments, don't be, they work wonderfully. Please don't miss out on the cheese mash (aligot)as it is light and tasty. For dessert, the deconstructed apricot cheesecake is great to share. The wine list needs some work as it seemed a little inconsistent in vintages but the wines by the glass are respectable. The staff were very attentive perhaps a bit on edge given it is such a new restaurant. However, I could not fault the service. The room is small but not cluttered. The noise level remains low even as the room fills. I would recommend this restaurant for any special occasion.
