Located on the ground floor of Pitt Street's Civic Hotel, this restaurant is run by Eleni, the mother of ex-Omega star Peter Conistis (now of Civic Dining, on the third floor). Entering the venue, you may be fooled into believing this is just another average city pub. But walk around the corner and you'll find a cute hidey-hole of close and cosy tables and chairs, comfortably snuggled up next to the open kitchen where grandmother Eleni and her helpers prepare their hearty Greek fare. And this is no easy task. Open for service during lunchtimes on weekdays, the tables are often full of hungry city workers on their breaks. Although being busy is a good thing in this industry, the open kitchen means everyone can look in on the cooks frantically preparing the meals. There is an opportunity for things to get ugly here, but thankfully, Eleni keeps everything under control without a hint of that explicit chef language made famous by Gordon Ramsey.
Eleni prepares a few of her traditional Greek meals in the morning, so there's no waiting around. Dishes such as the authentic and tasty moussaka are quickly served during the noon-3pm rush. With Eleni's grey head bobbing around in the kitchen, it's hard to deny that this food has a comforting and homely touch, as if your own grandmother has generously offered to cook up a lunchtime feast for you and your friends. Unlike Grandma's house, this venue also includes a bar with an extensive wine list. So organise to meet your friends at the Civic hotel and let Eleni look after you - a pampering sure to help you through that long afternoon back at work.

Such a Pleasant Surprise
I had been hanging out to go to Civic Dining for a long time so with the opportunity in hand I sauntered into the city on a Thursday Lunchtime to catch up with a friend. So you can imagine my disappointment to find that Civic Dining was closed, until further notice apparently. I begrudgingly settled for the lesser ranked pub food and was then so pleasantly surprised by great food. Between the two of us we had 2 entrees, 3 main courses and a dessert (I know what you're thinking) but couldn't fault any of it. To top this off we were served by 2 very friendly waiters who made what was already a very pleasant lunch into an afternoon to remember
