When it came down to it, owner and proud Irishman Karl Roche felt he had to choose between customers waiting in his cafe and customers waiting on the phone. So he ditched the phone. If you want to order one of Element's delicious (and increasingly well-known) pides, you're going to have leave the house, walk the streets and order it yourself, 'cause there ain't no calling ahead. Wooden tables that seat up to six people fill the floor space. Small ornaments, such as old clocks, a lone bowling pin and a rusty colander sit on shelves. Three walls are painted stark white and the fourth is a deep red, bedecked with exceedingly busy blackboards that list breakfast options - eggs however you want them, porridge or a special selection of toast with crispy bacon, brie, spinach, Spanish onion and French mustard - and the various pide combinations. Try the chorizo with caramelised onions, sage and apple chutney or perhaps haloumi cheese, oregano, mixed salad and salsa verde.
