El Torogoz

Like the national bird of El Salvador (after which this eatery is named), this is a rare little treasure. El Torogoz offers international cuisine with an adventurous Latino twist - while you might flit into this place like the pretty little namesake bird, you'll probably roll out like a big fat elephant. Try the lamb kofta, made of minced lamb with marjoram, mint, garlic and Spanish onion served with Israeli couscous salad and roast tomato. Then for dessert, indulge in the platanos en gloria - banana slowly cooked in the oven with palm sugar, cinnamon and vanilla beans served with ice cream.

Try the cassava!!
Me and my boyfriend went here for dinner and were totally impressed.

The restaurant is tucked away from the main strip and is uniquely divided in two sections. the waiter was cute and was a joy to listen to while pronouncing the dishes ;). We thought we'd give the place a go to try something different.

I had the pork and cassava dish. The cassava was beautiful and tastes like chunky beer battered chips. The pork was so tender and the salad came served with a delicious sweet sauce. My boyfriend had the lamb stew which was also very tender and wonderfully spiced.

We ordered a side of thick and tasty chorizo and were pleased we didn't order an entree as the meals were fantastically filling.

Our regret is that we were too full to try dessert, but oh em gee... The cassava was sooooo good! We will definitely be back!

A great night out.
El Torogoz has delicious food that was presented beautifully. Each dish has an abundance of ingredients and flavours, you'll want to try them all! All 8 diners were very impressed. The staff are very fiendly too. I am definitely recommending this resturaunt and will be back!

A suggestion: It would be great to hear some traditional music playing.

One of the best feeds we have had!
My hubby and I went here for dinner last night and it was so great that I felt I had to tell everyone about it! As mentioned above, we agreed that it was one the top 5 of meals we have had ever.
The entrees, mains and the dessert was fantastic! Amazing tastes and textures. The factor that it is BYO is another bonus...and the price...$99 for 2 entrees, 2 mains and a dessert for such great quality food is unheard of.
The chef - who must also be the owner as it appears family run - came out to apologise for the wait of our mains (which there was, but nothing too worry about) and was really interested in our dining experience. The service was wonderful also.
The restaurant is quaint and quite small but do not let this deter you from trying it. We will definately be back for another meal and I would highly recommend this place to anyone who asks!

The best South American food in Canberra
El Torogoz is a small, quiet restaurant which has a very unique feel.

My partner and I shared the bruscetta and a tortilla dish which was not on the menu. For entree and mains we ordered the barramundi and the chicken.

The flavours of the food were delicate and balanced - the guacamole was probably the best I have ever had!

The chef/owner was charming and seemed genuinely interested in ensuring that we were having a good time.
Just don't order the coffee he is a chef not a barista!

I am definitely going to come back for dinner! Go there! You won't be disappointed.

Something different
El Torogoz is a small, quiet restaurant with an interesting menu. My friends and I tried the pork tacos, a cassava and pork dish, and the veal. The meat was well marinated and tender with some nice flavours, somewhat reminiscent of Peruvian food. I especially enjoyed the cassava and loved the rice and beans which accompanied the veal. For dessert we tried the El Salvadorean cheesecake which was very light and tasted more like a flourless cake.

The service was polite and friendly and I think the restaurant is family-owned and run. It's great for a low-key meal and to experience a different cuisine.

Great authentic South American food
The food at El Torogoz is fantastic. We had main and dessert and it was really yummy. The chef came out to speak to us (I think he is also the owner) and he was so nice and keen that we were happy. It's small and has a nice intimate relaxed style and BYO alcohol which is great. I highly recommend it.
