Sloppy
Got takeaway from el torito. I got a beef enchilada and a chicken enchilada, and a chimichanga. When i opened it at home i received quite a shock. The beans looked like they have come out of a can, and the enchilada was rather small for a $20 meal. This was standard across the three meals. It was rather sloppy, and not what i was expecting at all. The meal was cold, and rather bland in flavour. Don't think I will be going back there any time soon.

Ordinary experience
I read these reviews before going to El Torito - thought they were 50/50 so I could give it a go.
Unfortunately El Torito were very ordinary on most aspects of our night. Firstly, we were jammed uncomfortably into the corner (table of 9), even after I particularly asked whether we could be accommodated comfortably (we had 2 very pregnant guests).
Secondly, we were told that we had to vacate our table by 8.15 as they had another booking. This wasn't told when we made the booking, but after we'd all been seated.
The food came out reasonably quickly (I presume it was because of this) however it was ordinary - my chorizo burrito tasted fine but didn't come with ANY salad, rice or accompaniments! My husband's meal was also average - he wasn't fussed, 'quite bland' is how he described it.
Each waiter asked us whether we were ready to order at least twice! Obviously they aren't allocated individual tables to manage - it got quite annoying in the end.
The meal was pretty cheap, but honestly I won't be going back in a hurry.

Great Mexican!
Yum! Hubby and I have had plenty of average Mexican before but we both enjoy the food here. Wide choice on the menu. They are usually busy so service can be slowish but meals are tasty and pretty big (prices may be slightly higher than other Mexican restaurants). Safest to book.

Great Food
I have really gone off Mexican food from the standard franchises so I thought trying out an authentic restaurant would be a nice change.

The food at the El Torito is just lovely. It's fresh, and filled with meat. When you order from the franchises they stuff your food with beans, but the beef chimiganga I had at El Torito was all beef. The service was a little slow at times, however it was Valentines Day so it was very busy and to be expected.

They were also nice enough to do a take away dessert for me. I would definitely go back to El Torito.

Better than Montezuma's, but how hard could that be?
We arrived half an hour late for our 6.00pm booking (the joys of parenthood), only to be told that our table needed to be vacated by 8pm. Unperturbed, we kicked off our order with nachos, which eventually arrived a soggy, gooey mess. The rest of the food presented to us that evening was above average by Australian Mexican standards, but by no means as excellent as lauded by previous reviews on this site (wouldn't be any conflicts of interest by previous reviewers would there?). The atmosphere was poor: it was extremely noisy and the shared toilet was located in a dingy bessa-block shack out the back, with the wash basin located back inside the restaurant, so at least you can see who washes their hands. Service was slow, but friendly enough.

To top it off, a plate of burrito was dropped on my wife's arm and subsequently all over her and the floor. Said plate was taken away, ice was requested to relieve the burn, and the same burrito was eventually (half an hour later) served to her with new rice. Later, the owner blamed the spill on my daughter, whose usually flailing limbs were nowhere near this waitress on this occasion. Expectations of the cost of the meal to be deducted from the final bill were unfulfilled, as was I and the rest of the party.

We didn't have time for dessert as the next party was due to arrive shortly, so headed down to the Three Monkeys instead.

Won't be going back and wouldn't recommend El Torito.

The closest to the real thing
Having been to many so called Mexican restaurants here in Australia I can truly say that this is the closest to being in Mexico.(Apart from having Salvadorian owners!) I'm Mexican and have been there with my other Mexican girlfriends and we all agree, if you're going out to have Mexican, don't bother with the franchises and go to the Torito.

Best Mexican outside of Mexico!
After living in Playa Del Carmen for a while I can vouch that this is incredibly authentic Mexican. So fresh, so yummy, and pretty quick given how busy they are. The bean chimichanga is so so good. I think I eat here at least once a fortnight. Just don't be too keen on a glass of water, we often wait a while for it to arrive.

Simply delicious!
Love the food here! Would recommend to anyone wanting excellent Mexican food at a great price. Staff are friendly, and while the decor is a little simple, I like it for its lack of pretension. The food is always fresh and tasty. What more could you want?!
