Opening late in 2006, this authentic Argentinean charcoal grill hotspot is guaranteed to ignite your tastebuds. Be prepared for a cloud of smoky cooking scents to engulf you as chef Fabio Rodles steams up a variety of South American specialties on the parilla such as the asado el Gaucho - an all-you-can-eat mix of al asado, matambre, morzilla and chorizo served up with fresh salads. The menu extends into traditional oven-baked pastries, frittata and meat-based specialties including steaks, Portuguese-style chicken dishes and pizza selections such as el pulpo al ajillo - a crispy dough base topped with mozzarella, octopus, parsley and garlic. The dining space is cavernous with open brick walls and twin archways leading to an upstairs bar and dance hall where you can sample live entertainment and brush up on your Latin moves. Sample the home-made desserts from centuries old recipes such as the flan a la pati con dulce de leche y crema - a mouthful of a name translating to a delicious pati style creme caramel - served with caramel and cream!

Argentina On a Plate.!!
We are Argentinian's and we have always wished to find a restaurant that serves "OUR FOOD" as we eat on the BBQ. What a dream absolutely delicious!!!!. The meat was all cooked to perfection and I was asked how I wanted my lamb cooked!!. The chimichurri is the secret to this amazing tasting meat... The service was excellent and the atmosphere feels like your having dinner in Argentina as the place buzzes with lots of conversations in Spanish and that's what you want hear in a place like this the South Americans eating their traditional food then you know its the real McCoy!!!..Hats off to the owner and the staff for bring to us the flavour of Argentina to Melbourne.

A carnivore's dream
One of the few places you must commit to memory. I've been to many restaurants, but never have I been to one where the staff actually cared about how well fed you are. The staff continually HEAPED our grill with ribs, prime cuts and sausage as soon as we cleared it, it was a mountain of meat we could not finish. Meat was expertly cooked, full of chargrill flavours, and the herb sauce was extremely tasty. I tried Argentine red wine for the first time, and was pleasantly impressed. The CabSav went perfectly with the meal. My favorite from the night was the Asado Ribs and the black pudding. We had the set menu, value for money at 38 dollars per person. Consisted of an entree, the main which is all you can eat (beef ribs, prime cuts, chorizo, black pudding, potato salad) a glass of wine and dessert. A carnivore's dream. I will be back!

A definite favourite.
We booked this place for my mum s birthday as a plan B and we ended up making it our plan A as the other restaurant was in hiatus! However it turned out for the best as El Gaucho was a great venue and atmosphere for our whole family who loved it and are still raving about it. The food was excellent, majority of our family took advantage of the all you can eat platter and I inhaled my chicken enchilada which included a side of rice and salad - it was delicious! Severing size was generous with lots of variety. It must be noted that the staff we re friendly and very welcoming, We all left very content, and determined to return to El Gaucho for our next family gathering.

Absolute meat fest !!
This is the closest thing in Melbourne to an Argentinian Parilla without getting the old man to light a fire !! If you like to eat meat, and enjoy a comfortable relaxed atmosphere then you'll enjoy El Gauchos. It's not pretentious, and it's not fancy, the meals are BIG and the prices are reasonable....I don't know what happened to "over priced overrated" they must have been vegetarians, because every time I have been here I have enjoyed the food....but maybe I am biased cause I was born in Argentina.....what would I know !!

Overpriced - overrated
If this is what true Argentinians eat at the prices they charge - then I can see how inflation has overtaken the economy. A barbecued lamb chop with a little salad(forget the Argentinian name) cost $28 - assorted small bits of meat and sausage $70 for 2. The service was sparse, meals were not explained. You were not asked how you wanted the meat cooked - it was all rare. The atmosphere( apart from a poncho on the wall) was nothing special.

Argentine carnivore delight!
At last a truly authentic and absolutely delicious Argentinian restaurant! As a native born Argentine I give this place a huge thumbs up. Your hosts, Jorge and Mayi are very welcoming, and offer a very friendly and prompt service. The menu reminded me of mama and papa's cooking with a selection of empanadas (meat pies) and of course - parrillada mixta (mixed grill).
A great selection of chorizis, beef ribs (asado), skirt, flank, and other very tasty morsels all cooked in our traditional way (over a charcoal grill).
The overall atmosphere was lively and allows you to experience the Argentine way: food and conversation!
Dessert was a plus - the flan was perfect!
Look no further and head to El Gaucho - your hosts' welcoming smile is only the beginning! Bueno apetito!

A true Argentinian feast.
If you want to try the true Argentinian taste, then El Gaucho is it. Finally the great Argentinian beef here in Melbourne. The asado, tender and very tasty beef ribs, chorizo and empanadas are all fantastic, cook to perfection. The service was great and a perfect country Argentinian-style atmosphere. Definitely made me feel I was in Argentina. Recommended.
