"Mexican food made by Mexicans": This is the roughly scrawled message that greets diners at Enmore's newest south o' the border cantina. It's a simple message but one that should bring hope and joy to the countless Sydneysiders who struggle to find authentic Mexican cuisine on their own doorstep.
For the uninitiated, if you're scope of Mexican cuisine revolves around expensive plates of beef mince and cheese on corn chips then dinner here will be an experience and an education. Real Mexican food is nothing if it's not two things: dirt cheap and tasty as hell. El Cuervo passes on both counts. Expect empanadas, soles, sincronizadas (tortilla sandwich with ham and cheese) and oaxacan black mole sauces that are light years ahead of the usual fajitas and tacos.
Just like you'd expect to find in Mexico City, the meal is only half the story here. The best part of dining at El Cuervo is the live entertainment, so plan your meal late as the performers don't kick off until close to midnight.
