Eis

On Bridport Street's mix of local business and fine dining, Eis is the perfect addition, offering simple yet sophisticated modern Japanese cuisine. Gentle jazz pipes through the long narrow dining space with abstract modern paintings accenting rich red walls and window seating on bar stools beside wine bottles displayed in rustic crates on the floor. The service is friendly and the chef's specials are ingenious with seared tuna carpaccio with ponzu (Japanese vinegar) dressing cropping up beside seared beef sushi, eye fillet steak and salmon croquettes. Assorted desserts like fried banana with home-made green tea ice cream make a great finale to the meal which can be complemented by a choice from the extensive wine list which draws from French, Australian, Austrian, German and New Zealand varieties. Eis seems set to live up to its name (which means "number one" in Japanese) with a dedicated customer base that applauds chef Hiroyasu's fine cuisine with many encores.

Can't understand why it isn't busier!
This is one of our favourites, particularly when we haven't made plans in advance, as they always seem able to fit us in. We cannot understand why it isnt more crowded. Ok so it doesnt have the "cool" factor of Misuzus, but the food and service are both very good. They even sold us some of their great beer mugs after my boyfriend enquired about where he could get some. Definite thumbs up.
