We love Ego
I find it hard to believe that you had to pour your own wine and water because i noticed that the waiters keep the bottles away from the tables behind the bar. anyway... Ego is different from the boring and stereotypical Italian restaurants that we are use to around the eastern suburbs. We always go back for more. The service is perfect and the food is well presented with the right balance of colour, size and price. The flavours are also well balanced. The wine list is the best Italian I can find in Sydney because after a pre-dinner champagne of Riunart in the amazing designed cocktail lounge, at the table I also ordered two bottles of Sassicaia 2003 and two of Ornellaia 2003. In conclusion: perfect dinner with great service and to top it off these exclusive wines that anyone will love to have on there list (and drink it). Ego - great style, great service, great food.

Disappointing
Tiny portions and exorbitant prices have let down the beautiful flavours and great atmosphere of Ego. This restaurant shows great promise, but they need to realise clients come for more than just the slick image - they also come for the food. The meals were beautifully prepared and cooked, but the ridiculously small portions meant my guests and I left Ego still quite hungry.

All style no substance
As we arrived it was all Barry White, but by main course the drums and bass had taken over. It was dark in there, but all credit to them - they offered flashlights! A slightly bizarre start but I am up for the new. Our waiter was buzzing, speedy you could say and full of useless information. An expert on the origins of salt & pepper and even more well versed in the advantages of bread rolls the size of a 50c piece. At least the laughs had begun. Saturday night, first table in, at least five dishes unavailable. My selected dishes were unremarkable and poorly exhibited in both technique, flavour marriages and presentation. The climax of our evening would have to be the well worded notes relating to the origin of the wait staff's attire - interesting and yet totally irrelevant. Ego - all style, no substance.

Too much Ego for its own good?
Oh dear, what can be said about Ego? Both visits have ended in serious disappointment following such promising starts. The first was a dinner for 2, superb cocktails, exceptional staff, fabulous entrees, then it all started to slip. The main course was decidedly average and by the end of the meal we just wanted to pay the bill and go.
However, not one to be put off, and to give the place a fair go I took 4 business colleagues there for a meal last Friday night. Dining early (7.30pm) we were one of only three tables seated.
Again off to a good start, the staff couldn't do enough for you, the cocktails were some of the best in Sydney and the entres were once again very good. Comments from my colleagues were nothing but praise for such a fine establishment.
Then it all started to slip as per the time before. The main courses were tiny, if the prices weren't as they are I would have ordered two servings!
By the end of the main course you would have thought that we were invisable. Table service had ground to a halt, so we had to take to pouring our own wine and water, not something you would expect to have to do at a place such as Ego.
Dessert came and went without a fuss, we paid and that was that. The manager did however apologise for the service however that's two strikes I'm afraid and not really worthy of a third attempt.
A real shame given the ambience and style the place exudes.

Ego - exceptional
I enjoyed some of the best cocktails I have ever had in the cocktail lounge before moving upstairs to the dining room to enjoy a perfect meal - special mention must go to the black squid ink and baby prawn risotto. Finished with a gold leaf - exceptional! Great service, sexy staff, stunning interiors/ambience. What more can I say? Overall an experience like none other in Sydney.

Ego
We were looking forward to trying this new Italian in Potts Point - great atmosphere and service in the bar, but food/service disappointing in the restaurant.
