Recently renovated and simply enormous, this Sunday yum cha institution often sports queues snaking into the street. The tea is beautifully fragrant and the myriad yum cha options are prepared with high-quality produce.

Whatever has happened to the East Ocean?
We have been going to the East Ocean for family events at night and yum cha on weekends for years and years. It has been an outstanding venue for Cantonese style cooking with some standout dishes. Higher prices but the quality has always been fantastic, service prompt and helpful and we have never gone away unhappy. Last night was ghastly and the end of this long relationship. We had booked for six, the staff declared it was 16. They had prepared a huge table for us. This was very strange as the person I spoke to was perfectly clear and repeated back to me the booking twice. They finally found us another table in a distant corner. The waiter had no idea what we were saying: brought wrong dishes, and then was incredibly rude. The first dish was plonked on the table but no rice appeared for ten minutes. Drinks came eventually but no tea. Having already messed around for twenty minutes while they found us a suitable table we all were starving and devoured the first dish. All gone long before anything else arrived. Then a waiter reappeared and asked what kind of duck we had ordered. Apparently the original waiter had thought it was Peking Duck - maybe he thought that was what people like us should have had. Of the remaining dishes, one was very good, two were OK and one was ruined by masses of highly stinky thick pieces of onion which had not been soaked or prepared properly. There were virtually no vegetables with any of the dishes (usually there is a reasonable selection of something delicious with all but the BBQ duck/pork style dishes. No fresh fruit platter at the end. Long before we had finished they started taking white cloths off the tables and rolling them away into the back room, as though about to close. East Ocean is famous for staying open until 2.00 am. Looks like that is no more.

Fantastic Chinese restaurant
Surprisingly, so many people still eat out at East Ocean. I have been dining there for years. Delicious seafood, very good service, and I think the most classy looking Chinese restaurant in Chinatown.
There were weird people loved to take photo with the king crab, very funny and fascinating :) I had the peking duck, it was very crispy unlike other restaurants. No wonder the floor captain claimed it is one of their signature dishes.

Never to return
My partner & I had dinner on Saturday night & got there about 9pm from the start the atmosphere wasn't the best. We got seated straight away but had to wait about 10 minutes to order drinks & then another 15 minutes to order our 2 entrees & 2 mains with boiled rice. The entree's of Crumbed Prawn Cutlets & Spring Rolls came out separately and were pretty bland. Then the mains came out separately also with the prawns in 3 special sauces first with some rice that looked like it was leftovers from another table. We finished the prawn dish & there was no sign of the 2nd dish of sweet & sour pork so we cancelled the dish. The service was poor & the staff has little enthusiasm if any and it wasn't like the restaurant was busy. As for the price I was a little surprised that it was the amount that it was even with the Entertainment card discount. I won t be returning & definitely can't recommend eating there...

yum cha
A place with two entrances. After midday is when you start having to wait for a table!!
Food is average but I found it a lot more expensive than other places. At times the tea lady just walked straight past us and to get tissues took a while. Asking for a waiter to get chilli sauce took a long time.
My friends had a bill that was $50 each!! They charge tea money for 6 people but there was only 4 at my table and 2 empty seats. A jug of soft drink is $12. Actually my friends were a little peeved with how much the total was. I think I've put them off eating yum cha in the city
I am not coming back, there is no way I can convince my friends to come ever again!! I never had yum cha cost so much before.
