East Imperial Chinese Restaurant

The proprietor's of Mao's in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, bring a fine-dining experience to the Italian-dominated Carlton restaurant scene with East Imperial, a modern multi-region presentation of Chinese cuisine. The sophisticated elegance of this architecturally designed space is inspired by the story of the Chinese First Emperor Qin who is depicted in sculptures throughout the restaurant's many rooms. The decor is serene and exquisite with teak furniture, beaded screens, river stones and sculpturesque lotus candles giving off a soft light.

Flute music plays softly to complement the culinary offerings which include a daily yum cha lunch, separate banquet and vegetarian menus and the much-requested Peking duck (crispy duck in plum sauce, wrapped in a thin pancake and accompanied by a cucumber and onion salad). An impressive wine list, mostly quality offerings sourced directly from Australian growers, is available for purchase by the glass or the bottle.

Western style Yum cha
The food is actually not bad. But do not expect to get the usual Hongki style Yum cha..The dishes have been tailored to suit more for the western.

Something good to share
I recently ate at this restaurant for the first time and will definitely be returning soon. Most friendly service and the best Chinese I have ever eaten. Dishes are great value for money. Thank you so much.

The vegetarian dishes are simple but extremely tasty and cooked to absolute perfection. I tried the grill eggplant, salt and pepper tofu, and the stir fried green vegetables dishes. I wish I didn't get so full, otherwise I would have eaten dessert. Highly recommended. Do not hesitate to give it a try!

Keep up the good work
I am a big Fan of Chinese Food and I must say this would have to be one of the best. Peking duck and the typhoon prawn sensational. The best thing about the place is the food as it is one of the only Chinese places where the food is not drenched in oil. Keep up the good work.

Save yourself. Go elsewhere for yum cha.
My fiance and I have had yum cha at East Imperial several times, but we won't be going back after our most recent experience.
We had to wait 45 minutes before the first round of steamed dim sum came around, no explanation offered. The food, when it did come, was not bad but unfortunately that couldn't make up for the utter rudeness of one particular staff member. Several times we had to call him back to our table after dishes were offered to the couple next to us but we were ignored.
Also, we ordered egg custard tarts from a waitress and after waiting for 15 minutes the same incredibly rude staff member informed us unapologetically that we couldn't have them. Initially he said they were sold out, but then changed his mind and said the next round would take another 10 minutes and then promptly walked away with our bill, not giving us the option to wait for our order. Obviously he wanted us out to vacate the table for another sitting, but we weren't told we had to be finished by a given time when we were seated.
Overall, the food is not bad, but $40 per head for fairly basic yum cha and completely charmless service is an experience I don't need to repeat.
Also, $4 per head for Chinese tea is just ridiculous and you practically have to jump up and down to get your pot re-filled.
Save yourself the hassle and go somewhere else for yum cha.

Best Chinese in Melbourne
I have become a relatively regular quest at East Imperial and each time the service and food seem better than the previous visit. I have never seen a menu there but simply ask the host and he does exceptionally well.
Every guest I have taken to East Imperial has been thoroughly impressed by my choice of restaurants and have all returned of their own volition. The staff are attentive and respectful, but above all the food is spectacular. A suggestion from a person that loves his food? When you go there (and you certainly should) ask the host to select your meal for you. Ask him to feed you and you will have the most memorable Chinese meals you have ever had.

No.1 Chinese Restaurant in Victoria
My wife and I celebrated our 6 wedding anniversary and once again the staff at East Imperial were master restaurateurs, the food is always first class & service is second to none.
The atmosphere is very relaxing and you can t help feeling like royalty with the attention that you receive.
Much better than the Flower Drum or Silks in my opinion.

Best Food and Wine
I was celebrated my birthday at East Imperial last week. It was really a memorable night. The food was marvelous delicious and valuable. We had a $48 banquet that you can taste about seven dishes that include my favourite Peking duck. The wine list also has good variety and reasonable prices. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful night and must be go back again.

Great for dinner
The restaurant provides a unique environment to eat in, not like ordinary Chiniese restaurants. Staff are friendly and helpful. House-special dinner dishes including typhoon prawns (manager Joe's recommendation), fresh from oven Peking duck and award winning entree dish prawn-in-the-pond are just the few fansinating dishes on their menu. Good value for money, and will for sure go back and try again!

A five-star fine dining Chinese restaurant
This is a stylish fine dining Chinese restaurant, it creates a delightfully tranquil atmosphere by use of high quality fittings, enhanced by Chinese antiques and details. This is an elegant and classic Chinese restaurant with perfect interior design. Not only for the dining experience, the service and food are superb! It serves a multi-regional a la carte menu or different special banquets complemented by attentive service, also a fine selection of wine at a very reasonable prices. I can simpy say it is hard to find a Chinese restaurant in Melbourne with the world class interior design and it is the best Chinese I had ever.

No kids
Back again for another fantastic yum cha with some great vegetarian options. The food here is incredible, consistently excellent and worth the slightly higher prices. Once again... don't take your kids. Difficult when weekend yum cha is usually a family affair. The decor at East Imperial just begs for little hands to touch... and the staff hate it when they do. We should learn and not go back, but the food is just so damn good.

Definitely worth a try!
I've only been to East Imperial for yum cha once but I'll definitely be going back again. This well-decorated restaurant provides such an elegant and comfortable atmosphere that is just way ahead of ordinary Chinese restaurants like those in Chinatown and Richmond. Straightaway you feel like you have stepped into a different age (dynasty?) behind those big wooden front doors. Common dim sum dishes can all be found, with some added special dishes such as wasabi prawns and spicy calamari tentacles. Vegetarian dishes like spinach dumplings can also be found on the menu. Over 100 wines, including some rare ones, and a variety of Chinese beers are listed in their comprehensive wine list, which added some extra points over standard yum cha restaurants. Waitstaff are friendly and helpful, and food price is reasonable, given that their dim sum are more well-made than the others. A thumb-up yum cha place that Chinese food lovers just can't miss.

Best Yum Cha in Melbourne
I have pretty much tried them all over the years and this restaurant is streets ahead when it comes to Yum Cha. Dumplings are steamed on demand for lunch mid week as ordered and immediately served in optimum condition at your table. There a number of unique Yum Cha dishes available including Wasabi Prawns and Potato Prawns. The service is cheerful and impeccable. The wine list is also very extensive with a good variety of sparkling shiraz - the Yum Cha food wine match made in heaven. Tasteful decor adorns the restaurant including a number of (fake?) full size terracotta warriors. Will not disappoint.

High rating for overall
I had my birthday party at East Imperial recently. It was sensational and we had a lovely time. The beautiful decoration, all the antiques and nice different tea pots surrounding us, very classic and elegance. You feel like you are in a palace having a meal. The food is good and nicely presented. It is hard to find a restaurant in Melbourne like that, it really impress me.

The service is as good as the food!
My boyfriend and I have eaten here several times. The food is consistently delicious and the service is outstanding. They really treat you like royalty here! The menu isn't as extensive as other Chinese restaurants, but it showcases the dishes the kitchen has perfected. Perfect for a long, leisurely dinner or special celebration.
