E Gusto

E Gusto occupies a simple and welcoming space of bentwood chairs, paper and linen-topped tables and high-backed banquettes. The Italian menu ranges from a traditional spag bol to a more unusual (but no less approachable) chicken breast with polenta, spinach, mushrooms and a capsicum coulis. The restaurant does not close between meals, so diners can drop in for a late lunch, an afternoon antipasto or an early dinner before a show.

What a Dinner
We dined at the restaurant on 4/11/09 and found it to be very good. The food and service was excellent and felt it deserved some praise. Was surprised to read some ofd the other reviews. Have I missed something here. Would come back on my next visit. Well done..

Judge it for yourself!
My wife and I booked a table at E Gusto before having read the reviews on this site. After having read the reviews we almost decided to cancel but decided to try it for ourselves. IT WAS GREAT!!!

Very warm friendly welcome at the door. Super efficient, polite service staff. Good food at sensible prices (for the location). The wine was a little overpriced but overall we were very pleased and will go again.

What happen to all the good italian restaurants?
The place was pretty busy on an average friday night with a good atmosphere. I ordered some curry coconut cream pasta dish because it sounded a bit different.
When the food finally arrive it was on a giant plate. The 50 grams of pasta seemed fairly big. It looked very good, but after my first spoonful it was clear the chef must have forgotten how much salt he had put in, I was reaching for the water all night as was my partner.

keep walking
E Gusto was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in Melbourne. The staff are unprofessional and were hard to attract, messed around with each other and did not care when I told them the food seemed to be straight out of a packet. The restaurant might seem Italian but the management has managed to attract a bunch of people who wouldn't know their canoli from their cannelloni. If you think tasty chesse should be used on pasta and enjoy eating in food courts this is the place for you...otherwise keep walking.

Looking for a nice meal out? It is not at E Gusto's
Well what a disappointment. What a drop in food and service since my last visit.
All meals arrived at different intervals. 2 meals did not arrive at all. Upon asking about the 2 missing meals we were informed they would not be arriving as they were out of stock, 1 meal had already been served and half eaten at this stage. No apologises and for a $180 bill we were offered 1 glass of wine for the entire table (not each!). I was desperately unhappy and will not be returning.

Shocking
We had breakfast at this long time tourist trap. We all ordered the same basic breakfast which was just some eggs on what was suppose to be toast but was warm bread with bacon that was cooked in a steamer, the tea was made with some sort of tea "stick" and undrinkable.

Birthday dinner a night not to remember!
Where to start.. firstly there was the booking mistake: the guy who greeted us at the door had booked other people onto one of my tables which i had booked for 2 weeks in advance then when my guests sat there he abused them because he said he had others coming to sit there! Then there was the meals: my guests ordered meals but asked for them not to be brought out until everyone had ordered so what do they do, they bring them out! We sent them back and said that we asked for them to be brought out with the others so when everyone else finally ordered and had there meals come out, instead of them bringing out fresh meals of the first peoples orders they brought the sames ones out which were cold. We were there way longer then we should have been because they wasted so much of our time with stupid mistakes!

This is not the kind of place people write about
This must be one of Melbourne's great survivors mainly due to its Southgate location. I end up there often when I can't think of anywhere else. I took my family of grown-up and a visitor from Thailand there recently because we could walk along the south bank of the Yarra River, have a good but not expensive meal look in on the galleries and touris shop and wander back via the casino. The waiting staff were working hard to turn the tables over. Table turn is why their prices have remained reasonable for years. If you recomend it to tourists they wont have a Melbourne fine dining experince but they wont go away feeling ripped off or under fed.
It wont appear in the Age reviews but give it a try.
