Perched above the hustle and groove of Mends Street, d'Tandoor is like a jewel tucked away in the attic. Despite its screaming red walls, the intimate interior is softly candle-lit and the staff are gentle, lending to a tranquil, welcoming space for diners. Like the rest of Abdul Malik Abdullah's d'Tandoor conglomerate, the South Perth branch specialises in Northern Indian cooking, preferring cream-based sauces to the spiciness of the South. The Pakistani chef, who has been with the d'Tandoor family for 17 years, specialises in Chicken Mumtaz, more popularly known as butter chicken; Tandoori chicken sizzler; and a selection of delectable dhals. None of the menu's yoghurt-based dishes have been switched for a cheaper coconut substitute, and there is no MSG. D'Tandoor has won a swag of restaurant awards in Malaysia and is on the verge of opening seven new stores in the Middle East.

Pleasant first experience!
Hubby and I went with another couple to try this little restaurant for the first time. Greeted warmly when we walked in, and they attended to us promptly. We ordered quite a bit of food - and it all came quite quickly (less than 15 minutes). The serving was very generous, the taste very nice indeed! The waitress continued to come up to us and asked us if we needed anything, which was better than trying to flag down staff for attention.
At the end, the total bill was good considering how much food we ordered (and we were allowed to take away what we couldnt finish - which is great coz in some Indian restaurants I've been to, they dont do 'doggie bags').
My only iddy biddy annoyance was when we were towards the end of our meal (but definitely still eating) and the chef came up to our table and asked us if we had any comments for him. Personally, I thought it was a bit tactless and a bit inappropriate to interrupt customers while they were eating, and put them in the position to provide feedback about what they were eating. Although we had positive things to say (and we meant it), I would have preferred to have been left to say all my nice comments at the end just before we were leaving, as we were paying the bill.
But apart from that, it was a great experience, I would have no problems recommending the place to others and I would visit again :)
