Dragonfly

Some drinking hotspots offer food out of necessity and it shows. While one of the cocktails here is called A Bit of Fluff on the Side, the dining certainly isn't. Chef Mark Ewan, also an owner, acknowledges the noshing needs of his urban clientele at Dragonfly and outstanding retro decor is backdrop for contemporary, innovative cuisine. European and Asian flavours are used well in small plates designed to share, as well as mains, sides and desserts.

Many hover around Dragonfly as a cool place to drink. It calls itself a bar and certainly has the music scene covered. Boutique beers and rather sexy cocktails also do the trick. Try procuring a bottle of Pol Roger while you contemplate the pan-fried haloumi and mushroom pate with Persian fetta. Nori salted chicken and okonomi yaki (Japanese-style pizza) are also definitely worth a try.
Pasta can be an eggplant and ricotta gnocchi with a herb and tomato sauce, while confit of duck leg comes resting on brown lentils and silverbeet with a pinot noir jus. Prosciutto-wrapped chicken breast is served with crushed potatoes, olives and salmoriglio, an oregano-based pesto.

Ewan's menu is intentional, intelligent and worth coming for alone. Everything else is icing on his chocolate lava cake.

Yum!
There are few places in Adelaide sporting a sort of 'modern fusion' menu which has excited me like Dragonfly's has... the chef is onto it! It was difficult to sustain conversation whilst sampling the wares here, experiencing the flavours demanded focus. My only gripe is that I wish there were more vegetarian mains on offer... a vegetarian can still experience a very satisfying meal here, but you might find yourself ordering the same stuff every time. The setting here is intimate, and can easily become overcrowded with large groups (especially as the bar fills with people of an evening), but for small groups of 2 - 4, this place is a must try, and I would be surprised if it didn't then become a regular haunt.

Sublime
When I dragged my friend into the the Dragonfly recently he was somewhat dubious about my claims that this was where I got the most 'amazing food' and asked how many times I had tried the food sober. Now I will admit that on a Friday night when after work drinks have gotten a little out of hand that I frequently head for the Dragonfly for a pleasant glass of wine and some salt and pepper squid...but that's the beauty of the place.....it's casual, you can walk in there at any time and get an amazing meal without having to have the 'fine dining' price or fuss. The enoki mushrooms wrapped in proscuitto will blow your mind as will the takatai beef. With very little prompting the staff can be encouraged to become your new best friends and even on the busiest of nights will help squeeze you in somewhere. It's not somewhere you take that first date you are tring to impress, (the decor is a little out there, think gothic stripper chic) but if you are looking for somewhere to sit down and share a taste experience that is well beyond the ordinary...go here. As for the friend, we have been back twice more (both times sober when we arrived) and I am having trouble convincing him to try anywhere new.
