The seaside location is just another plus at Californian-styled Donovans, thumbing its nose at black-tie venues everywhere with its casual air then turning around and doing black-tie food better than most.
The produce-driven menu understandably includes some excellent seafood options, such as Spanish-style steamed black mussels with ancho chilli puree and olive toast. You'll also find a whole roasted duck for two served with chickpea flour pancakes and an endive and watercress salad and the famous bombe alaska for two to round out a perfect romantic meal.

Like eating with extended family
The atmosphere is very casual and tends to be boisterous as it makes you feel like you are in someone's house as there are picture frames with families on walls and clusters of colanders, glasses and plates everywhere. The view of the beach is lovely and the food comes out quickly. Food was good but overpriced for what it was.

It's like a 5star kitchen in my own beachouse.
I have been to donovan's a multitude of times. The food is to die for and only last week i fell in love with the carpaccio with truffles OMG! Its a favourite of ours and we just keep loving it.
If you want a unpretentious restaurant, fireplaces and the ability to play jenga with a glass of whisky on the rocks.. not to mention have a belly full of absolutely exquisite food? then Donovan's is your place .

Worth the wait
My wife and i waited 3 weeks for a booking to Donovans. We attended for my birthday dinner, just the two of us. From the moment we walked in, the staff were very polite, relaxed but attentive. The service all night was tremendous, and I quite enjoyed the rustic, cosy atmosphere and decor. The standout on the menu was definately entree of duck on corainder pancake with a burnt orange sauce. Luckily for us this had only been added to the menu the day before! Main meals came out quickly and dessert was a fantastic end to a lovely meal. The chocolate souffle in particular is something to behold... Overall rating 9/10

Indulgence
This was a dinning experience for my wife and I. Food was everything that we had hoped for(Great). Service was excellent. Wine list was extensive with a great range. Magnificent view over the bay at night.

disregard for customer
I attended my brother-in-law's 50th birthday party, we were about 20 people with a prior booking and there the kitchen was notified that I was a vegetarian and I was assured I would be catered for. This did not occur and I had nothing to eat all night except bread and alcohol. I complained a few times to the staff who brought me some small pancake, which I told them I did not want to eat as I did not eat eggs for one thing, for another it was frugal and not appetising, but they just left it there and did not offer me anything else. The staff ignored my further complaints and attempts to get their attention. I was very uncomfortable all evening with virtually nothing to eat, with everyone else enjoying huge amounts of meats and seafood dishes which the table was laden with. I still was charged $75 for my non-meal (the tab for the table being paid by my brother-in-law) and my drinks bill was very large as I overcompensated the neglectful service with extra alcohol consumption.
