One of the blossoms of Sydney's recent surge of small bars, Doctor Pong is a concept-driven example of how to do cool and trendy without pretentiousness. First, there's the obvious novelty of having a ping-pong table in the centre of the main bar area (it's a great way to get conversation started, and besides, pool tables are so passe). Spectators can even sink into the comfy chesterfields facing the ping-pong action (and the all-important bar - let's not forget why we're here). Secondly, you can pull up a seat and table inside or outside if you're feeling peckish, and the small tapas menu has a couple of antipasto, vegie and meaty goodies at your disposal. Last but not least, Doctor Pong's round-up of live musicians adds an extra layer of cool to the proceedings, and you can expect acoustic, jazz, soul, Latin and disco to be on the set list.
