Restaurant Information
DOC Carlton
Set just to the side of pasta mecca Lygon Street, which has about reached saturation point for Italian eateries, this friendly corner pizza shop is attempting to stand out from the rest with artisan pizzas and a hip, laidback attitude. From the look of the queues (there are no bookings here), their plan is working and people are sitting up and taking notice. The modest-sized dining room is extended with kerbside seating, while slate-grey paint, a blackboard menu and squishy couches give the space a casual feel. The simple yet cosy atmosphere works well here, with the fragrant scents emanating from the pizza ovens providing ample aesthetic charm. Owner and chef Tony Nicolini has transformed this place into a classic European pizza bar, complete with shelves of Italian booze and a largely Italian-speaking staff. The menu features a tempting, tummy-rumbling selection of toppings, with recipes ranging from the porchetta pizza topped with creamy broccoli and chunky Italian sausage; to the traditional margherita, which features strings of mozzarella and fresh roma tomatoes imported from Italy. The menu is rounded off with an assortment of sweet, chocolaty dessert pizzas.

Not like the reviews!
I had read and heard some great reviews about D.O.C and its wonderfully traditionl pizza with a focus on seasonal produce and quality ingrediants. But when dining there last night, with 7 other friends & family, what we experienced was very disappointing. We were expecting thin base pizzas, with delicious ingrediants & combinations. But the pizzas we were served were extremely bland and lacked all flavour. We even found most of the pizzas had not even been seasoned properly, and when they were - still no improvement. I guess the most disappointing thing is that there are a few other places in Melbourne who make pizza with a similar ethos, but these other places excel, and their pizzas take your breath away! In today's climate, charging $19+ for a pizza that has no taste or flavour is outrageous. I'm concerned D.O.C has been resting on its laurels, and has lost the very essence of what made it a well reviewed place to eat. I won't be recommending, and I won't eat there again.
