Diethnes

Diethnes is the longest running Greek restaurant in the city, having occupied their Pitt Street basement for several decades. Not much has changed in that time. It is still a comfortable home-away-from-home eatery, packed full of regulars so loyal, they are virtually part of the furniture. The menu displays the best of traditional Greek cuisine, from the tender calamari to the delicate baked lamb. The specials board offers more innovative options, but regulars always return to the beautifully done basics.

Let's go Greek
Love this place. Been coming here for years. The proprietor, John, and his staff treat us like family - the family they like! Simple food done really well - the fact that you can have succulently roasted lamb on the table within 10 minutes of ordering is a constant source of amazement. No wonder it's such a lunch time favourite with the litigators of Sydney (conveniently located, as it is, within a stone's throw from the District and Family Courts). GJ

Surprised
I had a recommendation from a Greek friend to check this place out, and with those prices who could resist?

It's in an underground room down a staircase off Pitt Street, and I found the room to be quite warm and welcoming. We were seated in a booth at the back of the room in a 'mock patio' space. You can see this room has been around for a while, but it still has some sexiness.

The service is excellent, friendly and efficient. The food is tasty as Greek food can be, and it came out quite quickly. The meat in the dishes we ordered were beautifully tender and soft.

A hidden Sydney gem, I would recommend it definitely.
