Denn Restaurant

I had a nice meal at Denn a couple of years ago and wonder if they've changed hands since. This time we were very disappointed with our meals and I definitely won't be going back there. A pizza which was supposed to have pancetta on it had bacon instead and was more like a mass produced pizza rather than a restaurant effort. I had marinara which had a lot of cream but very little flavour and was quite pricey. Our meals took an hour to arrive with no offer of bread or anything else to tide us over. The waiting staff were pleasant but nothing made up for the disappointment of our meals.

My girlfriend and I had breakfast at the Denn this last Saturday (26/7/08) which was one of the worst breakfasts we've had in ages.

Note that this review refers to the food alone as the coffee was pretty good. Additionally in the sake of fairness I will only discuss my order though my girlfriend shares my sentiment regarding this meal.

My order was "Fluffy Pancakes with Poached Eggs, Bacon and Maple Syrup" off of the breakfast menu -- bad move!
The eggs were tasteless, stale cage eggs and arrived solid rather than poached. The pancakes themselves, far from fluffy, had a constitution more reminiscent of a foam mattress with a taste (or lack thereof) to match. The bacon was neither here nor there and was rather miserly in proportion. The single saving grace was the use of fake Maple Syrup, which I prefer to the real thing.

I didn't bother asking for a replacement as the same 'quality' was even across the breakfast menu as evidenced by my girlfriend's order .

Verdict:
Go for coffee, avoid breakfast.

I found that while the food was fairly good it was not quite value for money, being a little on the expensive side for a pasta dish or pizza. The menu had medium variety and the staff were fairly attentive. My main complaint was the uncomfortable seating and awkward chairs that I have been seated at, the front seating is quite nice but the back seating seems to be dominated by uncomfortable stools, making the atmosphere a little awkward.

Great food - the calamari (which we had with the Denn tapas platter was incredible! The mains were perfectly good (though not outstanding) -- far superior to an average pub meal. Pleasant atmosphere - not too noisy; the interior features old cinema seating (presumably from the Westgarth Theatre). Service was excellent when we arrived just before 7.00 pm, but by the time the restaurant had filled up at 8.30 pm, it was a real challenge to get the attention of the waiting staff. Also, our waiter seemed to be quite new - wasn't very familiar with the wine list and when we asked about the day's specials, he read from a 'cheat sheet' in his pocket. Dessert menu was disappointing; desserts are obviously not a high priority for this restaurant, since we were not presented with a menu - instead the waiter read out the desserts, again from the cheat sheet. Overall, a great experience and be warned that the serves are generous!

The Italian-based menu offers great variety and every dish ordered is tasty and well-portioned. The staff is varied, with some great service and some okay, but overall it's a great experience.

Met up with colleagues for lunch and enjoyed a fantastic meal. Had the fish of the day and it was beautiful. Could not rate the atmosphere as it was a Monday lunch time and the Denn was quiet but the venue is very modern and relaxed. Service was also great, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Have to say that i am glad to see that suburban restaurants are open on public holidays! We found the Denn Restaurant a breath of fresh air, the food was amazing and reasonably priced and the service for such a busy day was very professional and friendly! Great to see, the atmosphere of the venue was very relaxing and enjoyable to sit for hours.

I wish I was writing this under better circumstances, as in the past I have had great things to say of the Denn and its service. Tonight, however, was a great disappointment, as although the food was of great standard, the customer service my colleagues and I received from one staff member behind the bar was something to be desired and has tainted the great efforts of her team members.
