Della Nonna Ristorante

A relative newcomer to the Glenferrie Road dining scene, Della Nonna Ristorante adds a little Italian charm to the strip. The decor is neat and modern without losing its warmth, with crisp white walls, red banquettes, timber tables and floors, and a quaint courtyard for sunnier times. It's hard not to be tempted by the pizza creations that come out of the wood oven like clockwork, but you may well be swayed to try something from the specials board or main menu, like the assaggini tasting plates, or the rich pastas and risottos, or pork, veal, chicken and seafood dishes.

The makings of a great evening but...
It was a very pleasant Friday evening and we were looking forward to some good Italian food from what i had heard and seen in reviews about Della Nonna Hawthorn.
We didn't have a booking (higly recommend) so we had to sit outside in a pokey courtyard with a red covering that in the dying sunlight, reflected on us and made us all look like something out of a bad vampire movie scene. But that's our fault for not booking. The inside looked like it would have a great atmosphere.

The menu provides a lot of options to choose from, making the decision making process a difficult one!
I had the Fusilli pasta with pancetta, peas and goat's ricotta. The pasta is organic and appeared to be homemade which sounded wonderful. My friend had the penne with meatballs, another had one of the famed pizzas and another had the calzone.
Firstly, the pasta was very under cooked. I'm a fan of al dente, but draw the line when I can taste the raw flour and yeast. My friend eating the pasta thought the same. Her meatballs were quite plain and just tasted like mince rolled up and put in a tomato sauce, not very flavoursome and a little too pink on the inside.
The best dish of the night was probably the Calzone, but how wrong can you go with a Calzone?

All in all, I was pretty disappointed, especially considering the dishes are priced at a higher calibre of Italian food and we certainly didn't receive that on the night. No value for money especially when there are such fabulous Italian restaurants in Melbourne

The wine list had a good mix of Local and imported wine with the Chianti listed being a good drop.
The service was attentive, but not overly so which is a saving grace, but if you don't enjoy your meal, everything else just pales in comparison.

New!! Della Nonna at QV!
I am a frequent diner of Della Nonna at Hawthorn when a friend and I were wondering around QV and we happened to see, tucked away in the corner (next to max brenner) another Della Nonna!!! Italian with woodfried pizza. We were greeted whilst still checking out the menu. Come on in, its warm inside!
So in we went. It was lunch time, fairly quiet but people were moving quickly supposing they needed to get back to work? Anyhow we ordered some calamari and olives to start off with. The calamari was fresh, tender, not chewy and served with a rocket salad and vegetable mayonnaise.
My girlfriend ordered the ravioli.. Pork and veal filling and the pasta was cooked perfectly. I had the parmalat pizza, crispy and crunchy thin base with proscuitto and rocket. Waters were always topped up and drinks were offered throughout the lunch.
Last but not least the tiramisu, house made and scooped out of the bowl at the table. Rich but more than enough for the two of us!
Great work guys! Keep it up!

finally
i got in !
im a relatively newcomer, friends of mine rave about this place. i finally got in,a small place, buzzing, every one enjoying them selfs. We were greeted with a friendly smile and shown to our table.I was told to try the duck, but as i saw a pizza go by... i thought i might have both ! we started with a bowl of olives and complamentry bread.. great starter. my wife opted for calamri( which was very tender ) and i tryed a pizza (goomar ) thin not chewy, topped with white anchovies, cherry tomatos, fresh basil..great was even better than i was told it was.
my wife went with the lamb rack ( we where told they have just changed the menu ) wow big, juicey topped with a herb crust, and tasted good too. i decided to go with the duck, and im glad i did. boneless, crispy and cooked just right, this is fine as italian cooking gets.
I wasn't going to have dessert but i thought i would have a look at the menu anyway. There was a wide variety of choice in the way of cheeses, along with things like fried chocolate ravioli with chocolate fudge and pistachio ice cream; but i was sold as soon as i saw the word zabaglione. It was served hot, whisked at the table over grilled paoched peach and chocolate pearls. it was perfect, light, fluffy, thick and not at all any over powering flavours. The perfect way to top off the perfect night.
Service was very good attentive but not invasive, they have put together a lovely concept in a much needed area, food is great, price is right, its value for money, and we have booked in again.
