De Clieu

So a new cafe opens in Fitzroy. Big deal, right? Fitzroyalists aren't exactly left wanting when it comes to cafes. But De Clieu might just be the cafe that makes even the most savvy cafe aficionado sit up and take notice.

So what's so special about this cafe compared to all the rest? (Prepare for name-dropping of the highest order.) First off, it's the latest pet project from Bridget Amor and Mark Dundon of Seven Seeds and Brother Baba Budan fame; so naturally, the coffee promises to be amazing.

Secondly, rattling pans in the kitchen (without a stove top, he's that good) is Steven Carr, formerly of Giant Steps/Innocent Bystander and the Healesville Hotel. His re-imagining of cafe classics is what takes this little diner from good to amazing. His interpretation of the tried-and-true bacon and egg breakfast - a char siu-like marinated Berkshire pork neck, with a soft fried egg and smoky barbecue sauce all wrapped in a spring onion roti - is barely recognisable as, and infinitely better than the original.
