Da Bruno's

Finding Da Bruno's takes a bit of doing, being hidden behind a high wall in an old converted house, but this Italian fine-dining experience is worth the effort. The restaurant is BYO only, so showing up at the door with a bottle in hand is a bit like rocking up to a dinner party at a friend's place - an impression encouraged by the intimate nature of the 44-seater space. Chef and owner Bruno Securo prepares a seasonal menu, displayed on a blackboard, which alters constantly and changes completely every few weeks. The dishes are a thoughtful selection of house-made pasta, antipasti and northern Italian-inspired mains.

overpriced
I had wanted to visit D Bruno for ages - I had loved the previous restaurant in the space - Julio and Rositas.
I left very disapointed and my husband said he felt ripped off - high prices- ordinary food and service. While I would say the food was good (but not exceptional) it was very expensive and the restaurant trappings (cutlery, glassware etc) were of very poor quality.
The cheapest main course is $43 and the cheapest entree $27.
If you are going to charge these prices I expect excellent service, comfortable chairs (these are very cheap and nasty) and quality cutlery and glassware (the cutlery was so thin and cheap it was bent)
The veal chop main was excellent, the boned rabbit good too. The duck ravioli was just OK (good pasta but filling gluggy and overtaken by cheese) My rump of lamb was well cooked but was just lamb and ju which I could have cooked at home.
The serves are small (remember you are paying $43) and came with 3-4 tablespoons of good mash and a tablespoon of spinach. It needed at least another vegetable.
Desserts were good (semi freddo, chocolate torte, creme brulee and tira misu) but unexceptional and presntation was ordinary.
Our bill for 4 was $246. Which included a charge for bread and corkage on one bottle of wine.
Service was OK but we had to ask repeatedly for some ice for the ice bucket for our wine even though it was promised when we were seated. The restaurant was very noisy
Pay a little more and go to a really good restaurant that knows about service and quality,or a whole lot less for other great restaurants in the area.
We felt ripped off and will not return.

Should have been better!
Rave reviews led me to this restaurant so when friends suggested it I jumped at the opportunity but I left generally disappointed

My wife and I rate restaurants out of 5 for service and atmosphere, out of 10 for food, and out of 5 for value for money. We gave Da Brono's 12.5.

The service was pleasant but a bottle of white which was placed just out of reach in a cooler was not touched thereafter by the wait staff - after 45 minutes or so I just got up and filled the glasses myself - it wasn't a busy night so no excuses, I think.

The entrees - two tasting plates - were well presented and generally tasty but very small and quite simplistic. One seemed to be a tiny salad which wasn't worth its space on the plate. Another was one little scallop on a beetroot mash base - just silly. None of the entree items were memorable.

The mains were mixed but generally tasty - my beef was slightly undercooked but still good.

My wife was still pretty hungry by the end of her mains so we ordered desserts and a cheese platter. The platter was a joke - a tiny slither of a soft white cheese, a soft blue and two hard cheeses with crackers. My desert - poached pears in a cream sauce - hardly distinguishable from tinned carnation cream - just ok. My wife's semifreddo again just ok.

Perhaps a bad night for some reason - we might give it another go but we would more likely than not go to Chapter One in Subiaco instead.

The best
The food here is tremendous! I have visited on numerous occasions over the years with friends and been blown away each time by the menu.

The menu does change each season so it is difficult to recommend just one dish. To the uninitiated, I would recommend ordering entree-size portions of all the dishes to try everything.

The portion sizes are just right. With such quality ingredients over stuffing a plate would be sinful, as the courses do fill you up quickly.

The last time a group of us went, Bruno was only too happy to talk about the food and sit down for a chat at the end of the night when the service had finished.

Enjoy!

Not posh nosh
I feel that this restaurant is over priced and overrated. Where some reviews have mentioned vegetarian dishes, there were none to speak of. Service was brusque. Food portions for the antipasto and main version of entree dish were of a meagre size. Desserts were enjoyable but with a lack of presentation. Ambience was noisy and lacked warmth. Having dined on six continents, I fail to understand what the buzz is about.

Our fave restaurant
My husband and I live in the area and stumbled across this restaurant during a walk down Beaufort Street. We love dining out and are always looking for new great places, so knew we had to try this. I am an Italian food lover and my hubby loves his seafood, so we are pretty big critics when it comes to Italian restaurants. Da Bruno's was fantastic. The pasta is the best I've eaten, the sauces are mouth watering and my husband commented that it was the best seafood he has ever eaten - which we think says a lot. We've gone back many times, we've taken friends, family and reccommended to everyone we know. Gorgeous restaurant, intimate, and brilliant service. A+++. A must try - but book in advance, as it's a favourite for many!

This is the family restaurant you have been looking for, worth every dollar
Taking interstate friends to your favourite eating spot can be nerve racking, but Bruno and Marissa's welcoming ways make it feel like old times have come back.
Try the tasting plate of entrees, such a pop in the mouth selection, yum! Rabbit is to die for when on the menu for main. A chalkboard is the menu, as all is fresh today, rustic, real food with flavour, subtle rolling flavour so eat slow and enjoy, superb texture and just the right amount, satisfaction is assured if you are going 3 courses, but 2 is also plenty. The meal, a great hit with the sometimes difficult interstate guests, proud and happy to show off W.A. Italian at its best.
