Cutler & Co.

Funky Gertrude Street is host to many an amazing Melbourne dining experience. However, with the opening of Andrew McConnell's latest gastronomic temple, things along this eclectically cool street have reached fever pitch. While McConnell's new venture is perhaps the priciest meal ticket along the strip, those who were fans of his previous ventures - Circa, the Prince and Three, One, Two - will delight in the fact that this enterprising and talented chef is back behind the stoves at an upmarket diner.

The constantly evolving menu at Cutler & Co, if at all possible, has only improved. Proving he is much more than a flash in the pan and deserving of The Age Good Food Guide's 2010 Best New Restaurant and Chef of the Year, McConnell has created a menu that skips blithely between a rustic offal dish of tripe and cuttlefish braise with grilled bread and aioli and the refined haute cuisine of crispy-skinned Mandarin duck paired with foie gras. Both dishes are worlds apart and gastronomic experiences unto themselves, and that's just for starters.

Mains are an even more astounding culinary journey, spanning the elegant simplicity of baked ricotta combined with eggplant, raw globe artichoke and fennel right up to a northern hemisphere-inspired slow-roasted pheasant with brussels sprouts, earthy chestnuts and sweet quince. To finish, it is only fitting that Cutler & Co boasts a selection of premium imported cheeses, with an unpasteurised Tomme d'Abondance Traditional from the French Alps proving the pick of the lot.

Wonderful Lunch
Loved everything we had from the "set lunch". Service was surprisingly warm for high end restaurants. Overall great dining experience

Good night out
On the night we went the food was rather good. The most well liked dish of the night was the vanilla icecream sandwich, but other dishes such as the cured Kingfish with wasabi and the Violet ice cream, chocolate ganache, sour cherry and clove meringue were also great.

The decor is nice and the service was decent.
I would definitely go again.

Outstanding!
We had the pleasure of eating at Cutler & Co for lunch. The staff and service are exemplary; that wonderful discrete and yet attentive service that most restaurants fail to deliver. Here, it's delivered in spades!

The food was too die for. Their oysters fresh and so full of flavour. The scallops for entree will be a dish to be remembered for years to come. The only tiny little complaint was that the John Dory was perhaps a bit dry but once again, the flavours were exquisite. Of course, a dish of twice the size would have been appreciated but hey, that's modern dining.

A fantastic experience; I'd return tomorrow if I could afford it!!

Bad food guide
I went to Cutler and Co for a family birthday and coming off rave reviews in the Age and the chef being named Melbourne's number one the night before I was expecting an experience - and well I got one but not the positive one I was hoping for...

The menu was very limited, I appreciate the chef s notion of dinners sharing food but when the size of your party and their taste limit your menu options I am not a fan.

The bread was delicious and staff were attentive.
Our party ordered a variety of dishes with all a little disappointing.

The barramundi was particularly sad, served with pickled onions and broad beans the broad beans were the highlight of this dish. The fish was chewy and muddy without much flavour.

With such a small serve a flavour hit was expected, but was left wanting.

The extra greens and potatoes were a highlight but they were potatoes and greens

The chef instructed his staff to apologise and comped the meal, but I would have rather paid and had a positive experience.

The environment looks cool and trendy, perhaps there was a little too much time spent on looking cool and trendy rather than providing a quality dining experience something I expect from this higher priced venue.

Underwhelming and overpriced
A great space that has been tastefully decorated and attentive staff. Unfortunately the food let the side down. I had the suckling pig which tasted as though it was yesterday's leftovers reheated. My companions fared somewhat better with a mushroom ragu served with cheese and polenta and a fish dish which looked bitsy with a collection of small bites of different tastes along side the fish. The kiffler potatoes were in fact ordinary chats and the size of the dishes was small. The menu was limited and my choice of pork was based more on the lack of other desirable options rather than a first choice. The vanilla parfait and chocolate icecream was the standout dish of the night but overall it was a disappointing outing and we all decided that we wouldn't be returning.
