Once home to cargo and contraband, Newcastle's Customs House is now a rather more inviting venue for the public, with its transformation into a restaurant, bar and function centre. Built in 1876, this classic example of Victorian architecture overlooks the Newcastle foreshore, where the Hunter River meets the Pacific Ocean. The heritage decor, colonnades and sweeping staircases make it a popular venue for weddings and other special occasions, but the pub-priced meals and drinks make it equally well-known for casual dining and drinks.
Sitting indoors or out on the verandah, guests can choose from a range of light or more substantial meals, and a few pub classics. Start with scallops tossed in a French brandy and butter sauce; then move on to a confit of duck leg with roasted parsnip, Dutch carrots and caramelised pears. If you're in the mood for something simple, a House hamburger or Customs steak sandwich should hit the spot.
