In one of the best locations in Tasmania, facing the water between Salamanca Place and the CBD, Customs House Hotel offers an elegant, very-Tasmanian dining experience. The prices are eminently reasonable, given the innovative seafood-based menu and the rather auspicious waterfront location. While BYO isn't accepted, the adjoining bar stocks plenty of options and makes a good spot to settle down after dinner.
The Tasmanian tasting plate of fresh local seafood and other gourmet produce is a great introduction to Tassie cuisine. There's also a range of beef, lamb and seafood on the menu, with lots of simple favourites available, such as Spring Bay scallops beer-battered with chips and salad. Take a minute while you're there to admire the superbly crafted old sandstone walls - they're subtly lit and lend a warm, solid sense of history to your evening.

Food Wonderful, Service Ugh....
Went here for father-in-laws birthday and the food was sooo good, I had a crusted Trevalla main course & dessert was a beautiful trio of apple & berry crumble, chocolate pudding & sticky date pudding (plus I stole part of someones Blackforrest cheese cake and it was mmm) The only thing that let the evening down was the service of the wait staff. First of all my father in law (who is from overseas & has a heavy accent) asked for a scotch with ice. The waitress bought back a scotch & coke and when father-in-law said that he had sad just ice she argued saying that he had said that he wanted coke. secondly we had organised a birthday cake for father in law which we wanted to be a suprise (as you do) and the waitress came over to him and said to him "So it's your birthday then" ruining our little suprise. And finally we wanted the birthday cake to come out after main course which we had pre arranged but it didn't so i went to see the waitress who was standing near the bar fiddling with here electronic docket writing machine thingy but she snapped at me that she had could not help me right now as she had a bigger table to look after and she was getting confused. May possibly return again because the food was so good but definately would be second thoughts due to the waitress we had.
