Very weird and somewhat disappointing
We were very excited about dining at Culshaw's having seen the website. The website gives the impression of a very classy restaurant with a menu to drool over! The menu looked absolutely amazing and the atmosphere just right for a romantic birthday dinner.
While the service had a certain level of enthusiam, it was very strange. The specials were barked at us with no introduction. Having reserved a table a month in advance, we were asked to choose where we wanted to sit and all the good tables had been taken. Personally I think if a patron goes to the effort of reserving, they should get a better table than someone who walks in off the street. the only tables left were perched in the walkway by the till.
The atmosphere was very casual, more like a cafe. To our surprise, the restaurant was not in the roof garden but at street level (the hotel is the Majestic Roof Garden). No tablecloths, and the tables were so small that we could not fit our two dishes plus shared bread plate.
Other diners were extremely casual, there was even one woman wearing Crocs!!! Not quite the 5 star experience we envisaged.
The entrees were excellent - I had a crab souffle which was wonderful. Hubby had smoked salmon platter with insufficent bread - we were charged for extra bread.
The main courses were extremely disappointing and could only be classed as 'hotel food'. My other half had a steak ordered rare which came on the well done side of medium rare, and was served on a plain white plate with just two cherry tomatoes cut in half. My duck curry was very average.
We are regular wine drinkers, and of the wines served by the glass (I'm a white drinker and hubby is a red drinker so we always go by the glass) we only recognised one of the wines.
We had entree, main and one dessert plus two glasses of wine each and the bill came to $170. I thought this was overpriced for the service and food - cafe food at restaurant prices.
Given that Culshaws is just off Rundle Street, you would be far better to step around the corner and eat in any of the wonderful restaurants on Rundle Street for the same price.
Although there was nothing actually 'bad' about the meal or the experience, we would certainly not recommend Culshaws and we will not be returning. Very disappointing.
