The Japanese cafe is a niche that has found its footing in the domestic market, courtesy of trailblazing bubble tea houses and neon-hued dessert bars. This cafe hopefully represents the next generation.
Cre Asion, mercifully, is not as over the top as some of these. Take all the garish stereotypes of your average Japanese cafe and pare them back within the realm of Japanese austerity and you'll have a fair picture of what Cre Asion is about. Instead of diabetes-inducing gelato flavours and vacuum-sealed bubble teas, Cre Asion specialises in herbal teas - imported Mariage Freres, no less - and a range of Sencha toasted green teas.
The main trade, so to speak, is in macarons, and in this respect Cre Asion has put itself directly in the path of the mindless food-fad mob. (It's even tucked down an obscure, hidden laneway for good measure.) Owner and chef Yu Sasaki creates the obligatory unusual combinations like white miso or fennel and lemon that are designed to expand preconceived notions of what a dessert can be.
It goes without saying that Cre Asion will experience the full force of the ' Zumbo nation' once word of its existence leaks out. However, once the tide subsides you might find this is also a place to enjoy some artisan loose-leaf tea, not just a shopfront to line up for your next sugar hit.
