Souffle or not souffle
If you have never been to a fine dining restaurant but love fine food, my wife and I highly recommend Courtney's Brasserie in Philip Street, Parramatta.
The food is as excellent as the staff are attentive and while Courtney's refrain from using the title 'fine dining', their latest menu would rank well against any of Sydney's upper fine dining echelon.
Housed in a lovely old sandstone cottage, the atmosphere at Courtney's is refreshingly down to earth and warmly welcoming. I particularly liked the way they shortened the wait between courses with complimentary nibbles and samples that made for conversation and distracted us long enough for the highly capable chef to prepare our meals.
My wife had the duck and I the pork belly with mash infused with vanilla - it sounds unusual but the taste was fabulous. I am also fortunate to have a beautiful wife who shares everything (go on, try it) so I can report that the duck was exceptional too.
As is often the case with fine dining (if the shoe fits) the portion size had me initially disappointed. I was actually so concerned that I immediately ordered an extra side of hand-cut potato chips but as it turns out, the portion was deceptively generous and I worked hard to squeeze in the last bite. As for the side of hand-cut chips, I completely failed to make a significant dent in the large bowl provided.
Like my three-year-old daughter, I can always find room for dessert. While Rachel and I waited for our chocolate pudding to share (served with four delectable dipping sauces and home-crafted vanilla ice cream), we were surprised with complimentary hand-made chocolates, which were as superb as the pudding turned out to be. (I understand the chocolates are now a standard Courtney's treat for evening diners).
Not long before our own dessert arrived, 14 immaculate souffles were marched out of the kitchen to the party of diners near by. Seeing such perfect souffle replicated on so many dishes was a fine sight indeed - hats off to you Courtney's, we will be back!
