Courthouse Restaurant

The Courthouse lives and dines by the creed of good food, good wine and good times. This may not be the place to come when you're on a strict diet of celery and air but it is definitely the place to come to enjoy yourself and celebrate a meal.

The menu swings effortlessly from a Mediterranean-influenced entree of scallop and chorizo dressed with truffle oil to a beef curry you'd swear was straight from the subcontinent. There's even a French confit duck leg if you're feeling a little Parisian and a chocolate menage a trois dessert that definitely speaks the language of love.

A Hidden Gem
All I can say is the other 2 negative posts here must have gone to a different restaurant or possible other restaurant owners in the area posting these reviews.

My wife and I along with our company have been dining at the Courthouse for sometime now throughout the year along with friends and family and we can honestly say we have never had a bad experience or a bad meal.

The staff are always friendly, the food fantastic and the surroundings relaxing. We eat out alot due to work commitments and travel and the Courthouse is up there.

Worst Restaurant Meal
Yuck - could not finish my meal at this place! I ordered crab pasta. The serving was massive, the crab was tough and it tasted like tuna. My partner's steak was overdone (well done when ordered medium).
The decor was tacky and old. There was no atmosphere whatsoever - the place was so quiet (even though all the tables were full) that you could hear every word of everyone else's conversations.
The service was terrible and intrusive. I got asked several times how my meal was. The lady serving us was rude.
The only saving grace were the cocktails were delicious but overall wouldn't go back again.

Great night
The Courthouse ranks highly as one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne. With a few menu and decor changes as a result of winning Channel 9's Chopping Block, we thought it was time to pay it another visit.

The night we visited, the restaurant was about a third full, a fair effort considering they don't normally open Mondays. A new paint job and a few cosmetic touches have brightened up the original courthouse building (originally built in 1884), whilst still retaining the heritage feel. The waitstaff (consisting of one person for the whole venue this evening) was knowledgeable yet personable and was always attentive to our table. On this particular night, we were celebrating a birthday and had cards from the Courthouse awaiting us at our table on arrival. It is the small touches like these that keep us coming back.

In addition to an extensive and varied price wine list, they also offer around 40 international beers as well as locals and a large variety of spirits and liqueurs as well. For starters, we had the tapas tasting plate with garlic bread and bruschetta. All reasonably priced and delicious. The tasting plate for 2 was quite large and was shared easily between 4 with the breads. Mains were 2 specialty dishes designed by Matt Moran (of Sydney's Aria restaurant) during the filming of the Chopping Block) a hazelnut sauced duck confit with green beans, and venison served with mushroom fettuccini. Both were delightfully tender and full of flavour with their accompaniments enhancing their flavour, and not overpowering. Other mains sampled were a garlic cream sauce fillet mignon and a beef and mushroom rag(o)u(t). Desserts are a little pricey but are large sizes and can easily be shared, diabetic options can be prepared if you call in advance (as we did). The coconut creme brulee was fired at the table and served with a passionfruit sorbet. The cheese platter comes with fresh fruit and pate and is the perfect way to finish the evening.

All in all, this experience at the Courthouse was probably the best I've had there and I would have no qualms recommending this restaurant to anyone as their menu has such a different range of delicacies There will be something perfect for everyone. There certainly always is for me!

Quite Nice
While being slightly overpriced the food was very nice. I ordered the steak in pepper sauce which was cooked very well. Partner ordered the roast which was also nice. Service left much to be desired. Quite slow and inexperienced. Wine list was very very good as were their house wines. Nice decor.

Don't bother
We started off by our table being so close to the wall that once seated you had to stay there. Waitresses blunt and not very courteous. Food took well over an hour to come out. I had the salmon which was served on a bed of spinach mush, a slice of prosciutto so burned to the crisp that I couldn't cut it, then topped with a poached egg and a sprinkling of caviar. It was bland, the salmon was dry and overcooked and the whole meal was so hot that I'm totally convinced it was reheated in the microwave or kept in a warmer as all our meals came out at once (party of 12). Didn't bother with dessert. Waitresses had to pass food and drinks over our heads to serve the ones seated up against the wall. No sooner had we finished and we were asked if we wanted the bill. It was only 10.00pm. We lingered for another 45 minutes as this was a once a year get together, while the tables were stripped of everything and we were continually asked by the waitress to pass items over so they could clear up. To sum it up, don't bother. No atmosphere ,sevice was poor, food bland & overpriced.
