From the inked and dreadlocked staff, to the quirky interior and the passing parade of fascinating and eccentric people, this cafe is pure Newtown. One side of the narrow, rustic space is lined in green-glazed brickwork, while the other is painted deep red and dotted with tiny ceramic artworks. Wherever one looks there is something to catch the eye. The counter is fronted by corrugated iron and flanked by a glass cabinet, jam-packed full of food, from tempting sweet things to the ingredients for the range of salads on the menu - in this high-rent area, space is at a premium.
The menu features the usual cafe fare, from a caesar salad to the ubiquitous BLT. Main courses keep to the simple theme with dishes such as a grilled barramundi fillet and a selection of pastas. The enormous servings distinguish the place. Sandwiches are too big to wrap one's mouth around, while a platter heaving with waffles is enough to serve two with some to spare. Open until midnight daily, in keeping with the nocturnal nature of the area, Corellis is a comfortable local cafe to drop into anytime for a coffee - and of course, a spot of people-watching.
