A formula for a friendly spot could very well read something like this: centrally located, high ceilings, natural light, cosy tables for two, and a communal table to stretch the paper out on. Cook and Archies ticks all the right boxes. Tucked near Central station in an open loft-like space is a sturdy menu full of cafe classics. Poached eggs are a source of pride, found at breakfast with sourdough and a choose-your-own-adventure-style selection of sides. At lunch chicken club sandwich with avocado, roast tomato, bacon, basil mayo and rocket; salads such as the smoked trout with capers, potato, soft poached egg, pink grapefruit and lemon aioli; or lamb skewers with flatbread and yogurt dressing make happy companions. Don't forget to check the blackboards flanking the entrance for specials, which might include a zippy combination of sweet corn fritters with roast tomato, spinach, bacon and avocado salsa. Saturday mornings are especially civilised where you'll have the space to sit with the sun on your back and flick through a stack of slick magazines. Those who can't spare the time to linger will still take pleasure in Cook and Archie's takeaway breakfast specials, which include a bacon and egg roll and a coffee for under $6.
