Fremantle Prison is one jailhouse you may actually want to stay in for a while - it's the most complete convict establishment in the country. The heritage-listed venue is one of Freo's top tourist attractions, made even better by its onsite eatery, the Convict Cafe.
Both young and old can learn a thing or two about Australian history just by biting into the sandwiches, salads, burgers and rolls here; they're inventively named after slang terms used by prisoners referring to their offences (for example, the "Beaker Hunter" chicken sanga refers to a poultry stealer). On Wednesday and Friday evenings, the Torchlight Tour group packages can include dinner too, including dishes like pasta, chicken parma and tempura-battered fish.
